Kayla thinks she's stumbled onto a great summer job with people she connected with last summer. Right now, she's the newbie and can't wait to start pulling her weight. She's hoping to figure out some deep dark issues hidden under the surface about her past - the murder of her parents in the very woods she'll be working in this summer.
She can't help but feel Lucas's eyes on her. She knows that he's older, but she can't help crushing over him anyways. What she doesn't realize, but soon begins to unravel, is that Lucas isn't like other boys.
In fact, the townspeople aren't exactly normal. They mate for life at the age of seventeen, and Kayla's birthday marks the beginning of a trip. She has no idea what's going on around her, but with a group of scientists heading into the woods in hopes of catching a legendary werewolf, she's about to find out.
What she discovers leaves her as breathless as when she discovers she's head-over-heels for Lucas.
MOONLIGHT is slightly different than Rachel Hawthorne's other novels. While all have romance, this darker series plays with the supernatural. DARK GUARDIAN is not a series to miss. Hawthorne expertly weaves romance with the supernatural and cloaks them with danger.2 out of 2 people found this review helpful.

OMG JUST LIKE TWILIGHT!!
This book is so much like Twilight but with werewolves!Kayla 17 is the protagonist of the story and meets Lucas who is kind of bossy and proctective of Kayla in the beginning, but as things go on their love is so intense and passionate and soul deep! A must read!

Light Read and quick love tale.
This was a different kind of plot. Yet again we see another girl character go from knowing nothing about herself and woundering where she fits into the world around her. Then of course on her road to discovering that she is the soulmate to the leader of the pack. Of course I loved reading the book with all of its nice little twists in it. Of course I think the character development was laking but the story itself was refreshing. I think I will be looking forward to the next book Full Moon.

Wow you really need to read this!
One of the best books I have ever read! The plot is something new that no one has explored yet! Hawthorne does an amazing job telling the story of shifter soul mates

A Great Teen Love Story! I loved it!!
I picked up this book because another writer I like recommended it. I'm glad I did! The first few pages pulled me straight into the book. Kayla's birth parents died when she was little and so she was raised across the country from where she was born. She was raised around normal people and doesn't believe in werewolves. The whole 'in the dark' theme made it for a fun read as Kayla learned more about herself and her past amid fighting for their lives. Lucas was incredible! I don't want to give away too much, but his brooding attention toward Kayla gave the book something really special. I enjoyed it. It kept my attention through the entire book. I thought Rachel did a great job pulling in the other characters. I can't wait to read Lindsey's book. Rafe's bad boy image seems so opposite of her Miss Innocent. If I had to compare it to another romance, I'd say 'undying love' like Twilight. The only complaint I have is it was too short, but I guess compared to Twilight everything is too short!

Moonlight
MOONLIGHT, by Rachel Hawthorne sets the scene in the middle of the forest, where a group of seemingly ordinary kids work as wilderness guides, but there is a reason they claim these jobs. They must protect their land and the pack. When Kayla, an outsider to the wilderness reservation begins work as a guide things get weird, with flashbacks of the night her parents were murdered by a wolf on the very reservation she now lives on and the strong territorial feelings she gets every time she is around Lucas, the leader of this wild group of kids. Secrets are revealed in this novel to unveil a masterpiece.

I was hesitant at first about this book because usually I go for the vampire novels and not so much for the werewolf genre, but after just a few pages I was addicted and could not put the book down. Kayla seems so lost in herself when she first arrives in the wilderness and feels like an outsider because the other 'sherpas' have been together since birth. They are so tight and she feels like an invader. Rachel Hawthorne portrays her feelings so perfectly it feels like I am Kayla.
I love Kayla and Lucas, Kayla is innocence and Lucas is that bad to the bone kind of guy, they are two people you don't expect to be together, but Kayla is able to see through Lucas's alpha attitude and see that he really can be more than a pack leader. It is apparent that the two are meant to be together, but that takes a whole new meaning when it is revealed to Kayla that she is in fact a werewolf and when the time comes for her first change, she will need more Lucas more than anyone else, he is her soul mate.
This book branches off a little from the usual Vampire romance genre and goes into a more complex werewolf scene with lots of action. love, deception and surprises. I have very high hopes for Rachel Hawthorne as an author, and cant wait for more Dark Guardian books! -
Moonlight
Oh, how I love this series. Its was a great read. This book is like no other. That is if you like light and fluffy stories. Which I do of course. This is a werewolf story. In this book there are shifters. The male shifters shift first, and the females shift on the first moon after their seventeenth birthday. In order for the females to survive the shift they must be there with a male shifter. Preferably a male shifter who has chosen them for a mate.

Kayla parents were killed when she was little, so she had no idea that she was shifter. He goes to camp every summer. Upon this summer is Kayla's seventeenth birthday. At camp she meets Lucas the leader of the camp. He is also the leader of the shifters. Lucas draw dangerously close to Kayla. She has no idea that he has chosen her for his mate.
Lucas is such a gentle and patient man. Even when Kayla refused him he stood by waiting in the wings for her. Kayla and Lucas finally declare their love for each other. Kayla finally accepted the idea of being a shifter and accepted Lucas.
This book is told in a romance style. There are currently four books in the series. What I like most about it, is that it is all romance without the other junk. (sex, drugs, etc.) A teenager could read this book. But I will warn you it is real light and fluffy. So if you like that kind of read check it out! -

I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!
This book has EVERYTHING!!!!!!!! its has adventure and romance. I love how Rachel Hawthorne drags out the romance, like throughout the story, she keeps dropping hints about Lucas' attraction to the reader but at the same time, she's holding back on how much Lucas loves Kayla. I LOVED the whole series but this is by far my favorite, you will not be disappointed when you read this!

Moonlight by Rachel Hawthorne Review
I can't remember how I came upon this series, but what I do know is that I'm so glad I did! Moonlight is the first in the Dark Guardian series and once again I've found myself a new series that I already can't get enough of.

As a fan of the paranormal genre, I'm always excited when I find a book within that genre that has a new twist to the old storyline. The Dark Guardians' series has taken the old tales of werewolves and produced a new and unique spin on the characters.
Rachel Hawthorne created a story out of her very realistic world and had me believing instantly! Her main characters, Kayla and Lucas were great. Brave and compelling Kayla meshed very well with the dark and brooding Lucas. Their story was romantic, yet frustrating, moving and yet so much fun. I loved it all!
With werewolves being a reality and some ill intent humans after them for their own nefarious purposes, readers will be on edge to see if Kayla and Lucas will be able to defeat them and remain safe or if their in deeper water than they thought. Will their romance and feelings be enough to keep them strong for the fight ahead, or will it all be just too much for Kayla to handle with the other revelations she's faced with?
I've always been a fast reader but I was able to really fly through this book, it took only one day for me to finish and after I was done I wanted to jump right into the next installment. There's a little bit of everything in this series; romance, adventure, action and suspense, plenty of description and depth to keep you interested and wanting to come back for more. I really had fun with this one and already ordered the second installment, Full Moon, because I just can't stand not knowing what will happen next, I'm hooked yet again! I'm really looking forward to see where Hawthorne and her Dark Guardians' series takes me next! -
One of the Best Books I've Read in a While
This book is one of my favorites in the series. At first I wasn't sure if I'd like this series since it's mainly about werewolves, but it's one of my favorites by the author. Kayla's the good girl with a past and is falling hard for bad boy/werewolf Lucas. While she struggles to figure out her feelings for him, a greater threat arises. Bio-Chrome has discovered the shifters exist and want to study them for a serum to give others the ability to shift. And also the fact that Kayla has no idea that shifters even exist let alone that she's one of them, may turn out to be a slight problem. This is one book that I read over again and can just sit down and read in a few hours. This is definitely a book to read.

Moonlight: Book 1 of the Dark Guardian series
This is one of those books that's perfect for a rainy day...or whenever actually. With a little bit of romance and fantasy thrown in, Moonlight was exactly my kind of book and just what the doctor called for. LOL! :)

I loved this book. An easy read with a quick-moving and interesting plot. I devoured it in a few hours because it was hart to put down. The characters were perfectly developed - not to shallow but not too overdone either. Each had a bit of mystery to them, which I loved! Makes it a little harder to figure them out and then when their story is finally revealed you like, "Wow! Wasn't expecting that!"
After finishing up this book, I ran out to the nearest bookstore the next day and bought the rest of the series. I can't wait to start reading them. -

Shifters are the coolest!
This book is beyond the word awesome! It's great to hear about shifters in a postive view. All that theatrical nonsense about shifters being killing monsters is just like saying that regular house dogs are breasts, trained or not. I'm just glad that there's a book that doesn't write about shifters in a negitive point of view. I'd recommend this book to all Twilight lovers! Ecspecially those of you who love the character of Jacob the shifter. (werewolf for those of you who don't know)

Fanfiction Published
I read tons of fanfiction, some of it is okay, and some if completely fabulous. But most of it is very obviously amateur. This book, while good for a light read (hot werewolf guys? fun), feels very amateur and juvenile- the writing is not at all up to par with many that of many other books. There's a little emotion for the reader but not that wrenching emotional attachment that is awful but oh so good at the same time.

I might recommend it, but my recommendation would certainly be "borrow it".
In a few words: a cute, basic, fanservice that should be borrowed at the library.
