Christian Mythology Meets Gay Erotica
Finding this graphic novel was like finding a rare coin amongst a handful of pennies. I have been a fan of Gaiman's since sophomore year of high school and have happily devoured every book, comic, or short story he has ever written. Nothing he has ever written has failed to delight, amaze, and/or frighten me. This graphic novel, Murder Mysteries, was no exception. I had already read the accompanying short story of the same name in Gaiman's short story collection, Smoke and Mirrors, over a year ago when I found this slim volume. The story is a matter of heavenly justice, universal construction, and angels in love. I found the book tucked between an X-Men trade paperback and an Akira collection, bought it immediately and, once I was home, took up residence on my sofa where I read the book, cover-to-cover. Every image on the page was as perfect and precise as I had imagined, in my mind, when I first read the short story. P.Craig Russell's drawings are beautiful and Gaiman's writing floats seamlessly in and out of them like one of the celestial beings in the story. I was overjoyed at finding this book.
