I had never heard of Victoria Thompson, but her latest novel in the series was on the bestseller list, so I decided to start with the first book. What a pleasant surprise! I love Historical Fiction, and this book paints a beautiful scene. It is very well-written, and I felt as though I really got to know the characters. I felt so involved in the story, that when I realized one of the twists, I actually gasped out loud on the train. I purchased the second book not long after, and I have to say that I'm hooked. It's light, easy reading. Perfect to wind down after a long day.

No depth, no character, no need to buy

Ay,yi,yi. This is one of the most poorly written books I have encountered in a long time. I am amazed it was published. The writer mixes phrases of contemporary life, 'postpartem depression', with genre writing, and does not do it well. Instead of allowing the read...
Ay,yi,yi. This is one of the most poorly written books I have encountered in a long time. I am amazed it was published. The writer mixes phrases of contemporary life, 'postpartem depression', with genre writing, and does not do it well. Instead of allowing the reader latitude in reaching conclusions about the characters, Thompson slams the descriptions in your face. Bad, bad, construction and bad, bad development. Paltry application of research.

    Slow read

Perhaps my opinion would change if I finished the book, but it was so slow I archived it for another time. I made it through to the halfway point, and did not care.

read it if you like historical mysteries

An enjoyable read...not demanding but evocative of the time and place. A good break from "heavier" books.
