I was looking for a gift for a special woman and came upon Ms. Tenhouten’s book. Obviously it was not written for a non-metro-sexual, alpha-male such as myself, but is a perfect for a guy whose lady is into natural skin care products and would like to save a ton of money by using ingredients that can be easily found in her cabinets or purchased at the local grocery/produce store. Before gifting it, I read through parts (to make sure it was indeed a worthwhile book) and was impressed by the depth of her knowledge, her ability to convey information in a highly readable, entertaining fashion, and the practical, everyday usefulness of the ‘recipes’ she provides. (I also found the glossary of ingredients and helpful terms to be especially helpful.) There are more than beauty tips and recipes; she also presents a whole healthy lifestyle philosophy that the reader can choose to embrace in whole or in part, but she makes a very good case for behavioral alteration as being a core ingredient to a truly effective beauty regimen. I’ll admit that I found a few pearls of wisdom that would even apply to a Neanderthal like me (e.g., using toothpaste to dry out a pimple and I probably should take her advice and cut way down on coffee and diet sodas--unlikely to happen, but she’s right). In short, a terrific gift choice.
