    EDUCATIONAL and EMPOWERING

I found myself researching birth--watching movies like Business of Being Born and Pregnant in America--and decided to read this book. It was great! Overall, the author focuses on helping you create the best birth experience you can with as little UNNECESSARY intervention as possible...and the author helps you understand and distinguish between situations where interventions might be truly needed and where they could probably be avoided. The author provides tips (such as waiting until you hit active labor to go to the hospital or eating, crying, or moving if you hit a plateau while in labor), but does so in a way that provides guidance so you can feel comfortable and confident about making those decisions, even when medical professionals might advise differently. The best ways to describe the book are: EDUCATIONAL and EMPOWERING! I loved it and will definitely give it to friends to read.

This book was hugely helpful and empowering to read when I was pregnant with my second child and hoping for a natural hospital birth. It gave me just the information and confidence I needed to emotionally and intellectually prepare for birth in the hospital setting. This book is a wonderful resource for all expectant mothers, fathers, doulas and anyone who works in L&D. Highly recommended.

    A practical and informative guide

I am a father of three kids and have learned a lot about childbirth along the way. This is the most helpful book that I have found for educating yourself about childbirth and making choices about the type of birth that you want to have. The book is full of great information and practical advice. Plus it is easy to read and inspiring. The author provides information about the type of interventions that you can expect when giving birth in a hospital and how to successfully work with doctors and nurses to achieve a safe, natural birth. I also loved the range of stories of women who created birth experiences that were aligned with their personal needs and values.
