If You're a Fan of McCaffrey's Pern You May Enjoy This

I only rank this three stars because among McCaffrey's Pern books, it didn't leave a lasting impression on me the way the original trilogy or the Harperhall books, or even the book this is based on, Moreta, did. This book is short compared to most Pern books, centered on a minor character in Moreta. It's not a bad book really. It's readable and entertaining, and for those readers who can't have enough of Pern, you may very well enjoy this. I wouldn't let this be your introduction to McCaffrey or her Pern books however; there's better. I felt this particular book was too much in the romance novel vein rather than the science fiction/fantasy emphasis of the other books.

This was my introduction to Anne McCaffrey's works...

....and it was enough to hook me. Nerilka is one of my favorite Pern Characters, simply because she is not so flashy, not so talented, but with a core of integrity that is sometimes missing in the other heroines of the series. This book deals with the pain of loss and the joy of life. Also fills in a lot of background information hinted at in the other books.

    Easy read

Written in the first person, and while not my favorite form of story telling, it is refreshing to have a non-rider/harper perspective of Pern. A bit expensive for such a short story, but it does fill in a few gaps.

    What a waste

Half of the book is a repetition of Moreta' s story. The story feels like it was written to fill in some blanks. It is not nearly as good as the other Pern books. Its not worth the time or money. It's really just a short story, not a novel.

    Boring.

Nothing much happened here. I liked the pictures, though.

VERY GOOD BOOK. TIES IN WITH ALL THE OTHER BOOKS IN THE SERIES.

I REALLY LIKED THIS BOOK. IT CONTINUES THE DRAGONRIDER SERIES BUT IT ALSO STANDS ON ITS OWN. IT ALSO TELLS MORE OF THE HISTORY OF PERN AND TELLS ABOUT PERN FROM THE VIEW POINT OF THE HOLDERS.
