    THE NEXT BEST THING

I loved this book because it is so 'real-life', with a wonderful, witty sense of humor.
I related to Tori, the main character 100%, and the issues she faced in her life, like realizing that life is something that can't always be planned and put into a nice neat little box and tie a pretty bow around it. The supporting characters were all equally funny and I could really "see" each one as I was reading, especially Aunt Vera and each of Tor's girlfriends. I understand that this is the author's first novel, and I gotta say, she really hit it out of the ballpark with this one... HOME RUN!

    BRAVO!

It took me four days to read this, which is good for me because I am normally a slow reader. GREAT BOOK! The characters are well-written, and the book is so laugh-out-loud funny that it reminded me of Bridget Jones Diary. Tori, the main character is an event planner who is anal to the Nth degree, and likes for everything in her life to be in good order. Her fantasy wedding turns into a nightmare when her fiancee skips out on the wedding, and also skips town with his female "friend" with whom he had been secretly having an affair. Tori has a meltdown, and a close girlfriend encourages her to use a journal to help her deal with the demise of her relationship. While trying to heal emotionally, Tori also has to deal with an overbearing boss, and an idiotic assistant who may be trying to sabotage her career. Tori eventually starts dating again, and juggles dates with one loser after another, while also dealing with her extra needy friends and family who seem to need Tori to help them run their lives. I won't give away the ending, but it was so sweet and touching that it had me in tears. Bravo to the author! I highly recommend.

    I Also Recommend:

    EXCELLENT BOOK

Finally, something new and different! For the last few years, it seems like all that African-American fiction has had to offer was erotica, Christian fiction, and street/ganster/ghetto fiction. Not that there is anything wrong with those generes, but truthfully, when you've read one or two of them, you really have read them all. Still, being the avid reader that I am, I went to my local bookstore last weekend, hoping and praying that there would be something new and different on the shelves, and there it was: "The Next Best Thing"
I read the first few pages in the store, and felt like I had found a treasure! The characters were so vivid and real, that the story came to life, which is what a good book should do. I had never heard of this author before, but she did an excellent job writing this novel, and I look forward to reading more of her work in the future.
