A reissue, Night Magic, by Karen Robards is the story of a young writer, Clara Winston who spends her time writing romance novels and taking care of her three cats. She is a Southern bred woman who has lead, up until now, a sensible and sane life.
Mistakenly taken as the girlfriend of Jack McClain, a CIA agent, Russian KGB agents take her from her home, her cat Puff in hand, to try to gain information from her. They have also taken McClain and when they escape their kidnappers, they set about on a journey to discover the identity of a Russian killer, Bigfoot.
Clara is faced with things she never dreamed of in her sane life as she runs with Jack in an effort to evade being killed. Along the way she and Jack develop a relationship unlike anything Clara has ever known.
The story takes a reader through their paces as Clara and Jack seek the man they are hunting. Robards in the writing of this tale has developed a cast of characters that vividly provoke a reader's interest.
If you didn't catch this story the first time around, do so this time. At $7.99 it provides inexpensive and quality entertainment.2 out of 2 people found this review helpful.

Proofread!
The grammatical errors and typos were numerous enough that it killed my ability to get lost in the story. It's like a watching movie where they neglected to edit out a microphone falling into the scene.

Editing Anyone?
I found this book fairly good, even though the story line was dated. It still flowed well.

I was insulted and upset about the lack of editing. The typos were many and I took offense to it. Luckily the book was only $3.99, so this made it a bit easier to swallow. I purchase most of my books in digital format and I've never had one this bad. Shame on the publisher! -
Action packed romance
This was my first Karen Robards novel. I enjoyed the pace of the story as well as the main characters, including Puff! I liked how the indentity of Bigfoot was well hidden. Sometimes when you read these types of novels you figure out who the bad guy is half way through, that did not happen here. I will be purchasing additional Robards novels. I hope they are as enjoyable as this one!

When romance writer Clara Winston has her home broken into and she's forced to put her safety into the hands of a stranger, her life suddenly becomes dangerously close to one of her sizzling novels. Especially when said stranger is CIA agent Jack McClain, a handsome and exciting man to a fault. A man with a past that is better left a secret. Now running from a deadly enemy, Jack and Clara must uncover the truth behind a lethal international conspiracy, one in which no one can be trusted and the body count is rising.
The original copyright publication for this book was 1987, with reissues in 1993 and 2009. Due to the time frame this was originally written, readers will have to take that into consideration because there are references to Vietnam, as well as current events that aren't fitting for now. Aside from those brief references, it should not be distracting or deterring to read.
The only drawback to the book was that I felt the epilogue was a bit rushed. After everything that happened between these two, it was a great ending, but rushing it felt anti-climactic.
It's no surprise why Karen Robards has captured her readers for as long as she has. Her writing style is both intelligent and alluring, blending both romance and suspense equally, while never losing sight of the real world. It makes for an engaging escape into her books without that little voice inside your head saying, "yeah, right." The setting for this book, looping through Virginia and North Carolina, are beautifully portrayed. The secondary characters, including the antagonists, are realistic and flawed, adding to the plot nicely. The action sequences were appropriately interesting, including a scene where Jack and Clara were in captivity, sparing no niceties you often see in romance. Most of all, the romance and heat between the hero and heroine was well-paced and not over-gushy, making you aware of place and time and getting lost regularly. Clara, at times, could be quite irritating the way she argued with Jack on every little thing, but it added tension and I reminded myself that she'd been through a lot. A highly recommended read from this brilliant author!

I too read this book years ago when it was first published. I loved this book. I think it was the first suspense I read with humor. It is a keeper.

Very nice read
This is the first book from Karen Robards that I have read, I enjoyed it very much. The action was fun, and I liked Clara and Jack, however, I think Clara spent to much time crying and being scared, although in the end she did very well, and I would have liked to have known more about what Jack was thinking, most of the story is told from Claras veiw point, Jack was difficult to know. I loved Puff!! All in all I really liked the story and will look for more of Mrsl Robards books.

Very Disappointing
I have read many of Ms Robards books and have enjoyed them very much, but this is not one of them. The story line has been done many times before and the dialogue is very elementary. I found Clara to be annoying and Jack to be one dimentional. Not one of Robards best.

BEST BOOK I'VE EVER READ
I finished this book in one day, staying up all night on a school day just to finish it. Which I'm ever so glad I did because it's the best book I've ever read!! I normally read paranormals but this book is an exception and all romance readers should be sure to read it. It has its own special place on my bookshelf right next to Nobody's Angel, which is also one of the best books I've ever had the joy to read. This is the best book you'll ever read, so read it if you haven't!!

Great book!
I read this book years ago and it still has some of the best 'steamy' pages I have ever read along with a good story line. Would highly recommend to all romance fans.
