    Great!

This book starts off slow and dull but it gets much much better! Not only do you see life in the 40's from a girl..but from a Puerto Rican girl...you 'become' her as she faces prejudice..racism..and everything that comes with growing up. It's a touching story!

Great book for kids and adults

This book has touched the hearts of my adult ESL students and delighted my ten-year old and her classmates.

    An unexpected treasure

I could not believe how much this book touched me in so many different ways. The title character, Nilda, is so open about her life and feelings. She almost seems oblivous to the dreary circumstances of her life, reveling in the simple pleasures of being a child in a big city in the 1940's. Yet, at the same time her narrative denotes a concious choice to revel in the good things she can see through the eyes of a child rather than through the harsh realities of being a young Puerto Rican girl in the barrio.
