The writing seems a little disjointed at first, but after a while you get used to the style and the series of short anecdotes. The book gives insight into life and tradition in some parts of Africa. While there aren't any what you'd call belly laughs, there is humor throughout the book, a lot of human nature both good and bad, and many small mysteries instead of one or two big ones like in the more conventional mysteries we're used to. A good read once you adapt to the style.

no.1 ladies detective agency review

This book was o.k. What I did like was how when there was a plot, the author went into pretty good detail. What I didn't like was how it is talking about something, then the next chapter doesn't exactly start where it left off, it starts on a different subject.

Slow, but charming in its way...

I hate to say it, but I preferred the HBO TV series better... the book is even slower-paced. (if such a thing is possible) I don't think I will be continuing to read the rest of the series.

    A Mess

With all the hype surrounding this book, I expected to love it. I didn't. The story begins with a slow narrative about Africa, which is where Mma Ramotswa, the main character lives. We then get a very short anecdote about a case Ramotsaw handles through her detective agency. From there, we get many pages of background information from her father's life, in her father's voice - and her father is already dead. By the time the story got back around to the detective agency, I had forgotten the book was supposed to be about a a female detective. I found the book slow and lacking in focus. Honestly, 2 stars is being generous for me.

    Too little, too thin

Having worked at Barnes and Noble while getting my Master's in literature, I was aware of how popular this book was. It was one of the most requested from the mystery section, so I gave it a try on summer break from classes. I enjoyed the setting written in such detail, but the plot left something serious to be desired for me. I prefer in-depth plot, but these novels are based on a series of shorter, unimportant mysteries.

This book is really not much

I have expected to read a great detective story, but I was disappointed. I have found the book childish, not original. On the positive side, it could be a great reading for an 11-12 year old.

    Disappointed

I found this book disappointing. Maybe if I had more knowledge of Africa I would have appreciated more of the descriptions and local language used. The main character was enjoyable, but I found the book to be just readable, nothing I would recommend.
