    The intimate heart of Zen

Kwong-roshi's Dharma talks in the book 'No Beginning, No End' reflect the depth, intimacy and power of his teachings. I feel very fortunate to have listened to some of his Dharma talks in person. They inspired me to buy this book. What is so amazing is that the unique energetic presence of his heart and mind are transmitted in the writings of this book. After each chapter, or sometimes before one, I sit and practice Zazen. I am a beginner and without the support of the Sangha on a daily basis I have found that 'No Beginning, No End' encourages and deepens my meditation practice.

    An Inconceivably Wondrous Book....

As one who listened to many of Kwong Roshi¿s talks over twenty years from the back row of the Sonoma Mountain zendo, I can only say this book will take you to the front row. The pure distillation of the author¿s way-seeking mind reaches out to shine gently into the reader¿s clear heart, not to dazzle but to comfort and illuminate. Living day to day with this book and its calligraphy has opened a portal in me, not only to the silence and sun and steady practice of Sonoma Mountain and Kwong Roshi and his wife Shinko, but to Suzuki Roshi and his teachers, and beautifully on, to the far reaches of peace. Deep thanks to Kwong Roshi and his wonderful editor, Peter Levitt, for confirming the bounty of my experience at the Zen Center and for helping me, as a solo practitioner, turn mirage into refuge. Straight to the Heart

No Beginning, No End: The Intimate Heart of Zen is a tremendous book, & gift. Kwong-roshi's talks go straight to the heart, with great tenderness & care. In this crazy mixed-up world No Beginning, No End is a must read, whether a student of Zen or not. Much thanks & gratitude to Kwong-roshi for these talks & his presence. And to those who were instrumental in getting the work published. A great treasure!

    A subtle masterpiece

Jakusho Kwong-roshi's book is an intensely deep - yet serene - set of spiritual teachings that deal with Zen in an everyday manner. There is nothing lofty about what Kwong-roshi talks about - and that is what makes it so significantly profound. Dedicated to Kwong-roshi's teacher, Shunryu Suzuki-roshi, the book clearly reflects the latter's influence - but revises it in a uniquely American fashion. The result is a quiet, brilliant work.
