    a startling (good) surprise

I was no big Spice Girls fan. Didn't care for them but I didn't write them off. I knew they wrote their own music (which is a prerequisite for me to respect a recording artist), but a group effort of 5 putting out that quality of material didn't seem to say that much about them. Find yourself thinking the same? Think now that they've gone solo, their solo efforts are probably 1/5 the quality of their Spice Girls recordings? Dead wrong. It seems having the Spice Girls personas and expectations lifted off Melanie C has only polished off some hidden sparkle of talent we overlooked. This album, Northern Star, is one of the best recordings I've heard in a long while. This recording is edgier, more soulful, more sophisticated... I could go on and on... from what we've come to expect. The title track 'Northern Star' is exquisite- enough beat to be upbeat, yet enough soul and meaning to still be a ballad. 'I Turn to You' was a huge hit in the UK (from what I've heard; I live in the states), and it should have been. That song sends shivers up the spine and the words and melody just linger. Give the sample tracks a listen. That's what I did, and I was so thoroughly impressed with what I heard that I rushed out and bought the CD, and I haven't regretted it. Mel C always had a unique voice, of which I wasn't sure if I liked it or not, given the Spice Girl material. Singing her own music, though, it's a perfect marriage. The CD's part funk, rock, alternative, pop and dance. Absolutely one fabulous recording- something I never thought I'd say about a Spice Girl, but hey, I guess it's a lesson learned about first impressions!

Melanie C has done a great job mixing fast rocking roll edgy music with slow dance mixes. The lyrics are very powerful, and every song has a meaning that will touch you. this is just as much as the original so I reccomend this album featuring two of the best remixes out their of Mel C. This album is great, check it out. My favorites are Goin' Down, Northern Star, If That Were Me, Ga Ga, and Go!. This album is really good, and you will be surprised if you think you won't like it. This album will definetly make a believer out of you. Get it today!
