Good Plot, Characters Problematic
Plot is well-thought of, brings up interesting concepts in terms of both genetics and environmentalism, and executes both well.
However, Kress changes the narrative point-of-view often and as a result the reader finds themselves unable to really attach to the characters. Also, the narrative characters do not so much cause the plot as they are carried along by it, which is frustrating for the reader and leads to a further sense of separation from the characters.
In short, get it for the plot, not the characters.
