A Captivating Read.
The Obituary Writer is a finely crafted novel with no wasted words. While reading this book, I felt as if I were sleep walking or in an hypnotic trance. Everything is in slow motion, yet the plot moves fast. All of the events have an unreal quality, although they seem so authentic. The main characters, Gordie, Lorraine(his mother) and Alicia will remain memorable for years. Even the supporting roles of Thea, Ritger and Margaret deserve praise. When you reach the final page, your reaction is WOW!! This is an engrossing read, and I am anxiously waiting for Porter Shreve's next book. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. I dont usually write reviews of books, even if I love them, but I have to disagree with the last comment I read here. The ending of this novel is fantastic, arguably the best part, if you want my opinion. Not to give anything away -- this near perfect weave of a book demands secrecy -- but the ending is so completely effective because it leaves the responsibility on the reader. Unlike a lot of fiction I read these days, this book avoids the tidy explanation, the retrospective wrap-up. We are left, perhaps uncomfortably, in the position of the protagonist. The result: The Obituary Writer is a book that will stay with you for a long time. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
