I just finished reading the Anita Blake Series but in reading all of them I chose to skip this book until the very end, not a good idea. This book comes after "Blue Moon" and at the time I was really into all of the male characters in Anita's life. So when I heard that there were none of her men in this book I just couldn't deal with that so I skipped it and decided to read it after I had read the final book "Blood Noir". It was so my luck that in most all of the books after this book LKH mentioned some portion of it and then I knew nothing of what she was talking about because I hadn't read it. Well, I finally finished reading it last night and thought it was amazing. Everything that she mentioned in the other books finally made sense... I loved getting to see this whole other life that Edward "Ted" lives. It was nice to know that underneath that hard shell of his he's actually got a heart and a soft one at that. I loved how much detective, police work was in this book, it was thrilling at how fast paced it really got toward the end. It is a MUST read!!

I have read all the books in the Anita Blake series and found this one to be one of my least favorite so far. There was a great story line but most of the characters lacked a certain depth that i've come to expect from these books. Granted there was the development into the ever intriguing Edward but that is what i found to be most disappointing. I have come to love the character of Edward for his coy mysteriousness and a nack for getting the job done by any means. However the image i had of him was completely shattered when i found out he could be in love with an emotional basket case with two kids who can't really handle violence. This just wasn't the kind of woman that i saw him with, it was a woman that seemed to be more of a hinderance to the kind of person he is than a compliment to him. Anita played the role that had the kind of action that has come to be expected from her. Overall a good read but not a book i'll be picking up again.

    listen to me

i found hamilton books on b&n's web page when a couple of the books i looked at were by the same auther. i got to read all 12 in the blake seares with out having to waite monthes in between {go me} but of all the great reads 1 to 12 this sucked it was nice to get in to eds life. meet his girl frend and her kids. however anita and ed spend way to much time anilizing each other and eds two 'frends' bring nothing to the seares. mabe iam just dissapionted becase it got such great reveiws that i had to stop myself from skipping a head to get to it. or the fact that there is pages on pages of gore. a little i can take but iam in it for the plot. so in run down anita relize that eds dule personatly might just be who he realy is. ed rlizes that anita is not going to leave her boys at home for his well endowed friend. ed's other searil killing friend relizes anita is his sole mate aftter helping her take the head and heart of a vamp. an FBI agent relizes he should not have tryed to get antia on pay roll becase now others know what she is capabul of doing and would want her for ther own ends. 'see book 11' and ed's other friend that i mantion but sayed nothing about thats becase he brings nothing to the plot but his well endowed body. :)

    Why so angry, Anita?

I wanted to like it, really I did. This was a second attempt at an Anita Blake novel, and I couldn't finish either. Obsidian Butterfly was just too mean-spirited. I WANT to like the supernatural/detective angle, but I just find the main character too, well, angry. I'm rather disappointed, too, because I was looking forward to the new series with the Faery angle. Oh, well.

not that impressed in the midwest

i was not very impressed with this book, though admittedly this is the first time i've read either an Anita Blake novel or any novel written by Laurel K. Hamilton . In my opinion it should not have been lumped into the scifi genre, it would be a perfect fit in the romance genre if there were any romance involved. The characters were very shallow (maybe it is my fault for not reading the other Anita Blake novels and knowing the characters previously) and the plot was terrifyingly dull. The book seemed to be a collection of pissing-contests between Anita and her (almost exclusively) male companions, with plenty of vague references to how tough all the characters 'really' are. The book leaves a lot to be desired.

Some lines should not be crossed

In her search for the 'even more evil than the last one' villian, LKH has gone too far. This book contains a scene involving children being tortured and raped. This goes too far. I have returned the book and will not purchase any more of her titles.
