Awesome Book!

This is a very comprehensive book defining many off camera flash techniques. Most photographers never use anything but their pop up to add light. The book explains in great detail how to create some amazing pictures using creative, off camera flash techniques. I have a fresh, new look to taking pictures utilizing the addition of light from a flash. Many photographers will realize that for little additional money for the off camera flash cord or the Cactus transmitter / receiver that they open many new doors to their creativity in picture taking. "Off Camera Flash" is well written, easy to read with many examples of the suggested techniques. I can't wait for this amazing writing teams next books (which I hear are in work)!

I have already saved more than $300 with this book!!!

OMG!!!! I am so happy I bought this book. Simply amazing. I had just purchased a variable neutral density filter to let me shoot with larger apertures(since I can't afford the expensive 'creative lighting' options (FP) the manufactures offer). I thought that the VND was my only option. Thanks to this book I discovered (happily) that I was wrong. The best part was that I already had the answer in my camera bag!!! The 'cross polarizing' tip found in the book was fantastic and worked like a charm. I sent back the filter and am planning on buying three new flashes with the savings!!!! Thanks so much to the authors, please .... keep writing. I can't wait to see more from you guys.

FANTASTIC READ!!!!

This book is amazing! It's full of images of photographers actually shooting the pictures that are in the book. This in and of itself is quite rare - BRAVO to the authors for making a concentrated effort to show us how it's done. The book reads as if it's coming from their heart, like they really care ... and that so touches me. It's not just an add for Nikon or Canon like so many other books about lighting, it just says it like it is. I love the insight. It's so very refreshing. I've never been a full manual shooter, but this book has convinced me to change my mind. In very clear language it tells you why you need a flash off-camera and how to create images instead of just taking pictures. I so get this approach, it speaks to the artist in me in so many ways. Plus the tips it offers ... wow. Seriously this book is awesome and I can't wait to see more from them. BRAVO again to you both.

This book is Groundbreaking

Off-Camera Flash, Creative Techniques for Digital Photographers inspires you to be CREATIVE and to be an ARTIST, not only someone who does photography. If you're new to flash like I was, I always had one, but disliked it immensely, this book will open possibilities you never knew existed. This book has allowed me to travel to places in my photography that were previously unavailable due to my lack of light. It's truly changed the way I think and work. The Deutschmanns discusses new realms of digital photography, a new field of art to be explored and conquered, which I enjoyed greatly. It motivates the reader while teaching groundbreaking techniques that make high-end results available to anyone who puts forth the practice. This book offers ideas that aren't in every other mainstream photography book and I'm SO glad that I found it! I would definitely purchase another book by this author.

A Philosophy of Creative Photography

"Off-Camera Flash" is useful for the beginning photographer who wishes to learn creativity in their newly chosen path. It is also for the more experienced photographer who wants more choices, and wishes to see photography in a slight different, creative light. All on the canvas of beautiful San Diego.

While this book is similar to the Hot Shoe Diaries, "Off-Camera Flash" seems more accessible to those photographers from hobbyists, to those who make some money with their camera. The information is given in practical language, rather than technical jargon. While "Hot Shoe Diaries" tends to depend on sometimes expensive lighting equipment, the Deutschmanns' lighting system is more affordable --- even customizable and MacGyver-like. The system featured in the book is guerrilla style at its most adaptable, more tailored for those who lack the big budget for photography to get amazing photographs. There are also great tips for those who have the compact, or point and shoot cameras.

Although this book is mostly about flash photography, "Off-Camera Flash" is also a preview of the authors' overall philosophy on photography. Each picture has a picture, telling the viewer not only what the photographer artist sees, but feels as well. With a successful lighting technique, the photographer has the abilities to control their message. In the words of the authors: "learn to visualize the way something could look, instead of just the way it actually appears." This is visualizing your image in camera, without expensive computer programs like Photoshop. It is a revelatory idea that isn't found in other photography books.

In short, "Off-Camera Flash" is valuable for any photographer on a reasonable budget who wishes to take truly breathtaking pictures.

Taking Pictures to the Next Level

Light is so important to taking photos. This book has numerous examples, diagrams and descriptions about using the flash to create great pictures. From simple set-ups to using multiple flash set-ups, this book discusses them all. Great read.

I love this book !

Very, very good book, I just got this book the other day and it is Awesome, Thanks to the Authors for finally giving us a book that talks, explains and shows us how it is really done. This book not only explained to you what you are doing wrong when using your flash, but it shows you how to do it the right way. I love the "Home made" tools that you can make yourself instead of spending lots of money on some manufactures tools to create beautiful images. Thanks to the authors again, I am very impressed and I am already making progress in my own Portrait photography work with the help of this book.

Priceless information, unique approach!

Excellent read and wonderful material. Finally a book that takes a real look at how to create, instead of just how to use. Amazingly simple to follow (though it will help if you're a manual photographer - or someone who just wants to be). And this book actually has images of the authors shooting - it's full of them. What a great idea and so missed in other flash photography books. You can finally see how the scene actually looked before they shot and see the equipment they used. This book even has a gear list in the back -- though it's obvious that gear to the authors is secondary. It's straight forward approach is so welcome as well. I've been shooting for a long, long time and its great to see authors who will challenge the norm and say things like they are. They don't hold back, their techniques are fresh yet based soundly on some very traditional approaches. It was a joy to read and I'm recommending it to all my strobist friends.

Oh, and the whole thing about focusing on lighting the background first, and working your way forward - so brilliant and so simple, why hasn't someone else written about this???
