    Quite Enjoyable

I really enjoyed this book. I felt the plot was a bit contrived towards the end and it's a bit heavier on the seedier part of life than most mystery novels (this may, or may not, bother some) but the story was surprisingly upbeat.

a delightful book.....the mystery itself was good, the characters were believable and well-developed, and the author obviously knows his basset hound who made me laugh.....the story travelled between tense areas and hilarity...i recommend it

    Remarkable for a First Novel

At the end, I found out that this is Mr. Schreck's first novel. He has done a good job. Duffy is a social worker--counselor--as well as being a part time boxer. The boxing part occurs in the first part of the book, and he gets suspended for really racking up his opponent, losing the $7000 he had been promised up front. As his clients are rather much low lifes--druggies and prostitutes--we are soon immersed in that world. He seems to keep getting beaten by various people, and acquires a memorable basset hound from a client who dies. Al the dog also suffers along with Duffy, being mistreated. The finale is great. The reader would have to be someone who doesn't mind the seedy side of life. I think that I shall look for another of Mr. Schreck's book, but I somehow think that our book group is not ready for this!

I really enjoyed this book, and hope there will be more to come in this series. It was fun and funny -- a good light mystery.

    Really recommend this book

Well-written, believable likable characters. Doesn't take itself too seriously. Not the standard who-done-it. This is a thoroughly good read.
