Once: vaguely disappointing for one die-hard fan

Once created a sensation across the European continent, after its release. It had gone double platinum within no time; the song "Nemo" (track 3) had created its own fiasco, topping charts left and right until I could scarcely see straight. I'd reserved a copy months in advance--it arrived two weeks before the USA release date. I was elated until I actually listened to the CD. I won't say it isn't a good album--it is good! Nightwish's defining sound has gone through transformations, and this is but one of them, however, Once completely lacks the energy the majority of their albums have, and the lyrics are weak in comparison, lacking the rich portrayals of Wishmaster and Oceanborn. I am not at all impressed with most of the tracks. I couldn't even listen to the entire thing for about a month, since the entire album loses momentum somewhere after "Planet Hell". While this certainly isn't a "bad" album, I'd recommend their previous productions instead. Then again, I am passionately committed to Nightwish, so I have very high expectations from them. This is indisputably good music, when you look at Scandinavian metal or rock opera as a whole; however, when you look at Nightwish, this simply isn't up to par with most of their work.
