Abel Brent is not a gentleman by birth but by character. He is a self made wealthy man who wishes for his daughters to move up in society. He has enlisted the aid of the girl's godmother, the Countess of Haven, in throwing a house party so the young ladies may dip their toes in society's sacred waters. Beatrice and Cecilia Brent are close as sisters but very different in their personalities. Beatrice is petite, pretty and vivacious, while Cecilia is tall, beautiful and shy. Mr. Brent has warned the girls away from Jessup Pennistan (an unexpected guest) as he has a rather notorious background. This, of course, attracts Beatrice to him all the more. While Beatrice and Jess fall in love , Cecilia manages to find a beau of her own, Marquis Destry, a man who while he may be short in stature shows he is tall in attributes. This was really a dual love story (three if you count Abel and the Countess). It was a charming, light read.
