Opal
After the burning of the Dove House, Ruby Torvald married Rand Harrison and moved to his ranch. Ruby's younger sister, Opal, loves ranch life. At 14, she can shoot, rope, train horses and participate in roundup. Unfortunately, a little thing called school keeps getting in her way. One day after leaving school early due to a headache, she decides to take a detour on the way home. It's a decision that changes her life forever. Her friend, Atticus, ends up injured and is taken away from Medora. As she struggles with guilt and uncertainly, she comes to find that she is being shaped by a God who can make her more than a simple ranch hand. In Opal, the author takes us deeper into the character of Opal Torvald than either of the first two books in the series do. I thought she did a remarkable job of demonstrating the difficulties of Opal's situation and her personal growth without losing all of Opal's childhood innocence. The one thing I did not like about the book was that the author never addressed what Belle's reaction to the burning of the Dove House was. Belle was mentioned several times in the book, but never was her reaction noted. Somehow, I kept expecting it to come, but I got to the end and it never did. Other than that, it was a easy, comforting read. The storyline is actually much more complex than the synopsis above, but for sake of brevity, I gave the broad overview. Several new characters were introduced, including one who is extremely interested in Opal. I think the complexity really drew me in and made it all the more enjoyable.

Disappointed in the ending
I enjoyed the writing style of the author. I had expected a different kind of ending, but her historical writing and easy reading made the book as a whole enjoyable.

interesting Americana fiction
In 1886 Dakotah Territory, fourteen-year-old Opal Torvald finds school boring and taking time away from working on the ranch of her brother-in-law. Cutting class, Opal goes swimming in the nearby Little Missouri River with little on when a drifter threatens her. Her friend Atticus Grady fights the stranger. In Pennsylvania, Minister Jacob Chandler feels remorse over Melody who when she arrives at his home ailing informs him she no longer can take care of their seven year old son Joel before leaving the child behind with Jacob. Unable to face his flock Jacob accompanied by Joel head west getting off the train in the Dakotah Territory when they run out of money. He finds work as a ranch hand though he is not very competent at it. --- Meanwhile the drifter incident has had repercussions with Atticus being beaten badly and a neighbor killed. Opal¿s sister sends her to attend a New York school where she hopes the tomboy learns to behave more like a lady and to get her away from the drifter. A sad Opal wonders when she will be able to return. --- Book three in the Dakotah Treasures series, OPAL, is an interesting Americana fiction that brings to life a bygone era. Readers who want a better perspective of two key secondary characters will be better off perusing the first two tales (see RUBY and PEARL) although this novel can stand alone. Opal better at ranching than the average male seems a stretch until the reader compares her to teenage golf and tennis sensations like Wie and Sharapova. Her trouble adapting to New York City and Jacob¿s to ranching make for a fine tale and sets up another novel.--- Harriet Klausner

Wonderful, and very entertaining.
I enjoyed reading more about Ruby and her sister Opal, how they overcame great odds in the old West and become productive members of society where the odds of a woman surviving in an nearly all man's world. I will continue buying Ms. Snelling books.

Best read in order. Ruby - Pearl - Opal
I read books one and two along with Opal. Best read in order. People making it thru hard times when our country was getting started. My kind of storys. However the religion got heavier with each book. Could do with a little less of that. A real pleasure to know I don't have to put up with bad laungage and heavy sex. Wish more authors would wake up to that fact.

My Favorite Book of the Series
This is the third of a 4 book series. I love this series. The characters are lively, honest, and have good moral standings. The stories of early North Dakota are always interesting, and are never what I expect them to be. People are always helping people. These books always make me feel good, and want to be better in my own life. I can't say enough good things about the series.

Good book. Should be read as part of the series.
This book continues the storylines developed in books 1 and 2. It begins to introduce some new characters. It begins to develop some of the characters more from the other books. I enjoyed it, though it wasn't as engulfing as the first two books. I don't think it would stand strongly on its own.

Highly recommended reading - check it out!
Read the two books which belong to the same series. It gives a better understanding of Opal. It is strong how she and her sister Ruby managed to live in those difficult circumstances. I love these stories which give a kind of feeling how it must have been to live in the 19th century.
