Just finished reading this on the advice of my sister, who got it from our mother, and avid reader of old books. This was written in 1939, I believe, and is the tale of a staid Englishman and his young family who are, quite unexpectedly, thrust into the throngs of war. As they escape the incessent bombing of their small English town in their cramped and ailing boat, the reader, like the characters themselves, is struck by the sheer absurdity of this whole ordeal.
