stories with characters carrying immense pasts while trying to struggle through their present

I love how these stories are driven so much by the immense pasts the characters carry while trying to struggle through their present. It makes for some wonderfully tightly-woven fiction. Very clean and moving, sharp and cold at the same time that it is compassionate and sympathetic. Really, there are too many layers to these characters to be explained and summarized in a review. Better to read the stories and see for yourself.

plain speech, in the mother tongue

This collection of stories drew me in, completely. Patricia Henley's people, with their flaws and confusions and missteps, their compromises and their courage, are real and familiar, with a depth and simple truth in each of them that makes them more than "characters". None are glamorous or glib or rich; they inhabit the imperfect world where the rest of us live, with its messy family, financial and personal problems, and they struggle to survive, as we do. The magic here is that each of them comes alive, individually, in a way that draws us into their stories and makes it difficult, even painful, to leave them. They are revealed to the reader without a wasted word by a writer who has both the skill and the courage to bring them vividly to life, not in an ideal world, but in the world as it really is.

This is an amazing story collection!

Other Heartbreaks is just plain fantastic. I did not want the book to end so I savored every sentence. The sentences are delicious, but the amazing women characters--all unique and all vulnerable, funny, honest, brave--are what hooked me. Each story is novelistic in its richness, and creates an entire world in a vivid setting--from the rural Midwest to the dreamy spires of Oxford, England, from Ashland Oregon to the grit of urban Chicago. I highly recommend this delightful book..Patricia Henley has done it again!
