The Outlander series is really good and now I am hooked on them just like all my freinds. Well, before I read any book series I HAVE to get most of them before I start to read any of them and I hate to read novels out of sequence.
Outlander was a delight! My friends were RIGHT! It WAS good and I did like it! I too fell in love with Jamie. In fact I felt sorry for the bloke! What he went through!! I cried for him, hurt for him, was enraged with everything he went through, right along with the heroine. I wanted to pummel Captain Randell so many times, even wanted to smack Jamie a couple of times for being so stubborn!
Gabaldon not only brought the characters to life but the time period as well. I really felt I was in Jacobite Scotland. She is an extraordinary storyteller. The book was suspenseful and filled with intrique as well as with romance. I'd still like to know who hit Jamie on the back of the head. She never really explained that. Several characters where suspected, but none admitted to it.
While slow in places, especially when the heroine was talking about the historical aspects of the time period or something that had to do with healing, the book had a nice pace and did keep me interested until the end. In fact when I reached the end I wanted MORE! Thank goodness there IS a second book! I have begun Dragonfly in Amber and already it has me intrigued and in tears!

Soft porn

I was disappointed. It was a subject I was interested in with likable characters but it was soft porn that got worse the deeper you got in to the book.

    I couldn't finish it

Perhaps my expectations were too high, I'd been told by so many how wonderful her books are. Okay. But I wouldn't recommend it.

    A Life Diverted

Outlander is a book about a life diverted (or perhaps one that finds its true path?). In the beginning of the book, we see Claire in her own time, as a wife who is reunited with her husband after war. In 1945, we able to get acquainted with Claire and her quiet life. When she is transported to the 1700s, she gradually becomes a different person through the chaos of life on the Scottish highlands. Her need to survive and get back to her husband makes her show bravery and intelligence in the dangerous situations that cross her path. The development of Claire's character throughout the novel is wonderful. I also enjoyed the relationship between Claire and Jamie (a Scottish soldier she must marry to save her own life) and how through the course of the novel you can see their love deepen. In terms of plot, I was a little disappointed. At 627 pages, there were many situations that could have been cut from the novel. At one point I was concerned when another person was being kidnapped and a character was being tortured for a second time. However, the adventures that didn't repeat themselves as well as the political intrigue were fun and engaging.

    Beware of the Violence

This is a well written book with interesting characters. However, the violent scenes involving S&M, rape, wife beatings upset me and I will never read another one in this series. People who have issues with these topics should be warned this is not the best book to choose. For this reason I give it three stars. If the violence had been omitted or tamed down, I would give it five stars in writing style and story.

    Brilliant in most aspects

I was bought Outlander as a gift for my birthday. I was thoroughly enjoying the book, the vividness and beauty of the characters and of Scotland itself. The thing that stopped me enjoying all of this book was the ordeal Jamie went through with Captain Randall. I felt it was unnecessary to the story and made me sick to my stomach. I have never imagined things so evil could be done and with all the sadness in the world, I see no benefit in creating more for the sake of fiction. It has left me feeling ill inside and as I do not wish to dwell on anymore such tales, (I don't need to feed my mind with such cruelty) I choose not to read the rest of the series. If I had known that was in the book, I would never have read it, no matter how beautiful the rest of the story is.
