I'm a sailor of the Vietnam era. I was not aware of the book until 2012 long after I retired. At first I found the book interesting at best but as I read further I am in awe at the detailed narrative. On or return to the US from the South China Seas we toured and paid tribute to the great naval battles detailed in this book, how horrendous it must have been. I regret not knowing details of my father-in-laws capture in Corrigador,PI or the exact location where my father was wounded while attacking Manila PI. Had I known details I would have paid a visit to this locations while RR in Subic Bay PI, I recall Grande Island as a beautiful place with clear deep shores. not knowing that my Father-in-law was detailed to restore the defenses to the entrance to Subic Bay in Grande island. than moving to defend Corrigador and captured by JAP forces there in 1942. Or that my Dad traveled to Manila through the jungle where a jap sniper shot him in the neck and back possibly from the Subic Bay area.
A book for all Sailors to read never will we see battles as this again. Where battles lasted days . now they are measured in minutes.
My Thank You to all Sailors Soldiers and Marines, for leading the way with immeasurable courage.
