This delightful read will entertain you and keep you laughing out loud and maintain your sense of wonder about space. You don't have to be a space wizard to appreciate this gem of a book. Everything you wanted to know and a lot you didn't, about space programs and the details of space travel from a human perspective. While not just informative, it's a great story and it's so funny!

I spent $200 on the nook, because?

Yet another unavailable title. Purchased my Nook just 6 days ago and this is the 7th title I can't download. Wish BN was more honest - "all the Jane Austen books you'll ever want, downloaded in seconds on your 3G Nook..." Not very happy.

    Must read for space enthusiasts

Mary Roach's Packing for Mars is a must read if you've ever wondered what it takes to go into space. The book is very informative, taking readers through the development of manned spaceflight, answering all sorts of questions from "What is it like to be weightless?" to "How do you go to the bathroom in space?" Mary Roach's writing style is very approachable, and she does a wonderful job of explaining many, many complicated subjects, turning what could be boring technical writing into an exciting and entertaining look at spaceflight. If you're a fan of her other works, you'll enjoy this one too.

    A great space read

Written real and raw; factual and funny; enlightening and entertaining. I chuckled through this eye opening read.

    mostly funny and entertaining

I enjoyed the first 3/4 of this book. Accounts of Russian cosmonauts and the real drama and humor behind the scenes was funny and entertaining. The final chapters seem to get lost though and literally reverted to potty humor which dragged on far too long. Then there's question about the ending or lack there of.

All Gross Stuff It Will Take To Get To Mars

What happens when you vomit in your space helmet? What will we do with all that urine on the five year journey to Mars? How about purify and drink it! Packing For Mars delivers the goods on all the gross that goes into a journey to the Red Planet.

Mary Roach brings her signature brand of thorough research into out of the ordinary subjects. Never before has the history of the space toilet been so diligently reported on. The author goes so far as to note the typical direction a turd will 'flow' in zero G. Additionally, crash test cadavers, space suit vomit, a ride of the vomit comet, the animals of space travel and even the taboo topic of sex in space.

I have read Mary Roach's "Spook" previous to this. Packing For Mars comes off much better because so much of the research is unexpected. She brings up the things you would never consider to be a part of space travel but are necessary to think about. My only complaint is that the book was a bit short and reading it as an eBook made the end seem very abrupt. Digitally it ends at page 231 of 344. There is just a lot of bibliography and end notes.

If your read Mary Roach before, deffinitly read this one. If you haven't even though it is her latest, it's a great place to start!

    Fun

Mary Roach isn't a scientific expert, by any means; however she doesn't claim to be either. She takes the reader on a very easy to read journey through the history of what NASA has had to endure with keeping astronauts alive in space. All that "crap" (pun intended) that lay folks don't think about, she does. I've read a great deal about Mars, and this was the first book that discussed urinating and craping in space. Fun read.
