I thought this was a cute book for the target age group. My two young daughters liked it. Although it is an interesting story, it is in my opinion a good story that could have been much better. The plot is unique yet uninspiring most of the time. While the heroine Cecelia does seem to mature at the end of the book, the hero Harper doesn't leave adolecence to move into manhood even though he wants to get married. I didn't like the whole scenerio at the end with the queen, it was too contrived and not realisticlly accomplished.

Well, first off...I don't understand how everyone loves this boo

Well, first off...I don't understand how everyone loves this book.  It was fine, but the whole time it just kind of screamed "corny".  The problem was the writing, and the fact that all of the princesses were only 14.  Princess Desmia seemed much older than 14 to me, maybe 18, and Cecilia seemed more like 10.  She is very childish, and Harper's whole character bothered me.

I think this could have been a great story, if it had better writing.  Part of my problem was that I am an advanced 13 year old, and I would recommend this to 9-12 year olds who aren't out of their fantasy mindset.  It all just seemed so unrealistic, but it could've been solved with better writing.  I also didn't like that even with Cecilia's training, she just seemed so dumb.

Lastly, the ending was satisfactory, except for the way that Harper and Cecilia's relationship was left.  They just seemed so socially immature that it was like they were 10, and when they talked about getting married it just seemed so darn corny, especially since they were supposed to be 14.  I don't like Harper at all, and I don't like Cecilia at all.  I think that if everyone was older and presented more maturely, I would have enjoyed this book.

Most of my friends read this as required reading, and none of them liked it. I normally love Haddix, but this book was simply not good.
