I first picked up this book at a book fair in junior high. (still have that copy) A young kid is tossed into world traveling and saving territories from Saint Dane. The journals in Bobby's POV was fun to read; the characters were easy to relate to when growing up. The humor was subtle and perfectly timed. MacHale brings great action, characters and many territories along for the ride. This is a great read for young middle grade readers. Even though they're a little long, this series pays off in the long run.

One of the greatest series ever!

This has to be one of the best books I have ever read! D.J. Machale portrays the amazing adventures the main character, Bobby, goes through to save an entire universe from collapsing. The subtitle “The Merchant of Death” may give off the semblance that this is a “guy’s book” and not a “girl’s book,“ but I can assure you, that is not the case. There is actually a little love story where Bobby’s girlfriend is stuck on Earth and desperately hoping that nothing bad will happen to Bobby. If you’re not already tempted to read this book, I’ll let you in on a little secret; the second book is crazy good, but to understand it, you have to read the first book.
