Penguin¿s Special Christmas Tree, by Jeannie St. John Taylor, Illustrated by Molly Idle, Lobster Press, 2007, 24 Pages, Paperback, with punch-out ornament, Age range 4-6, ISBN-13: 978-1897073612, $9.95

Penguin¿s Special Christmas Tree by, Jeannie St. John Taylor, two-time Gold Medallion Book Award finalist, and Oregon author, penned a delightful and quirky story about a Penguin who wants to win Santa¿s Best Christmas Tree Award.

The simple story, with appealing childish dialog, is suitable for both youngsters and toddlers. Novice readers can also easily read the story. The account is short enough to hold youngsters attention, and amusing enough to make even parents smile. Glossy and charming two-page picture spreads complete the story.

Molly Idle, former DreamWorks Feature Animation Studio illustrator, provides delightful illustrations to engage youthful imaginations, and on occasion, the pictures will leave youngsters laughing-out-loud. Idle¿s quality work demonstrates her previous experience on major animation films such as The Lion King, and Sinbad, Legend of the Seven Seas.

Larger-than-life caricatures feature illustrations of Penguin, the ornaments he chooses, and his Christmas tree. Penguin¿s side-kick, Angel, is a delightful pink elf who attempts to put real-life Christmas tree toppers on the tree. First she tops the tree with a live frog, then a real monkey. She even considers a lighted Halloween pumpkin. But the real snowman atop the tree will make youngsters giggle when the snowman melts into puddles on the floor. However, Angel doesn¿t give up and learns her final solution has been there all along.

Children will enjoy this seasonal Christmas story, and will learn about the importance of teamwork, the gift of friendship, and why it¿s so important to never give up. The last page contains a Christmas tree ornament made of card-stock. Youngsters can punch out the ornament, fold it together, and place it on the Christmas tree with a little help. The book is available in French or English language, in hardback and paperback.
