Perfect Nightmare
I really enjoyed this book lot. It always had you guessing who was the bad guy. Your think its one person and then it turned out to be someone compeletly different. Someone you didnt think it was at all, or expect.
I enjoyed the twist and turns, and I also enjoyed the plot. But with this book in particular I notice you had to pay close attention to details. So at the end of the book it all tied in together.
It wasnt scary like his other books, but it kept you at the edge of your seat the whole time.
If you are a John Saul fan you will enjoy Perfect Nightmare.1 out of 1 people found this review helpful.

Pefect Nightmare/ Perfect Book
I loved this book. Although it was not a horror novel it was a great read! You really feel for the girls that this man is torturing and the mothers who are trying to find their missing daughters. This book shows what a small world really is. BECAREFUL when selling your house! You never know what kind of loonies you will atteact! Give it a try, I enjoyed this book to the max.

First Time Reader of John Saul
I found this book very hard to put down. I just loved it. I agree with the other readers that the ending was a bit sloppy as it did not tie everything up very well but still a page turner.

tense thriller
Attorney Steve Marshall is exhausted from his daily commute from his home in Camden Green, Long Island to his firm in Manhattan so he and his wife agree to relocate to the Big Apple. While Kara seeks a brownstone for them to live in, their teenage daughter Lindsay objects as she expects to be named the high school head cheerleader besides why would she leave suburbia and her friends for the dirty city. A psychopath recently burned down the home of Patrick Shields, a Marshall neighbor, killing his wife and two daughters. This maniac targets Lindsay next using a realtor open house to enter the Marshall home on two occasions for initial reconnaissance and finally the abduction of the teen. Stunned Steve buries himself in his work and frantic Kara tries to recruit her neighbors and the media to help her find her missing daughter while police sergeant Andrew Grant assumes she is another run away. --- The story line explodes early into a tense thriller, but in spite of several homicides, once the audience meets up front and personal the psychopath he seems tame especially dealing with his teenage female prisoners his threats towards Lindsay appear ineffectual and empty even as he murders strangers. Still John Saul provides an interesting tale because of the reactions of Lindsay¿s parents. Her father buries himself in the sands of work while her lioness mother recruits an army to search for her cub. --- Harriet Klausner

Another great read from John Saul
You won't want to put it down. It keeps you guessing right until the very end. And it has more twists in the plot than a rollercoaster =]

THRILLER!
Perfect Nightmare is by far my favorite book that John Saul has written. It's about the Marshall family living in Camden Green who's currently searching for a new place to live to better accommodate Mr. Marshalls office job in the city. Lindsay Marshall is very upset because she aspires to be the head cheerleader at her high school as a senior the next year. All that changes when she goes home late one night after the open house. Frantically searching for their daughter the Marshalls half-way lose each other and Kara Marshall falls into the safe arms of Patrick Shields. Is he all what he's cracked up to be, or is he somebody completely different?

Compared to some of the other novels John Saul has written, this book is by far one of the most suspenseful with turns that take your breath away. Saul is a master of including tiny details that seem to be irrelevant and making them add up to end the story with a huge KWA-BAM. I recommend this book for any person who wants to read a chilling, frightening, realistic novel. I give it 5 stars!

ehhh, not that good but somewhat entertaining
I'm an John Saul fan and was not impressed. It was entertaining for the brief 220 pages, but not a real thriller. If it goes on sale for only a couple of bucks it would be more worth the money.

Long on Plot, Short on Character Development
Perfect Nightmare is a perfect example of why I enjoy reading John Saul, but why I also need to take a break for a while from his novels after reading one or two. Saul's stories are always suspenseful, with teenagers often as the central characters. The story moves along rapidly making it a quick read and he throws in a few odd characters to try to keep you guessing who (and more importantly, why) the deranged antagonist does the things he does. I realize Saul is much more about plot than characters, but why, oh, WHY must he always make his protagonists (in this case, teenage Lindsay) so goody goody perfect--straight A student, a shoe-in for head cheerleader, dozens of friends and not one person who finds her to have a character flaw. And why must his adult female characters always be portrayed as helpless and annoyingly pampered? And his male characters so equally one-dimensional as provider and soothe-sayer who must keep the woman in his life from getting hysterical. It drove me up the wall to read about Kara and Steve's dilemma. They must move to the city because he has to make a long commute and they can't keep affording to pay for his apartment in the city. So why doesn't Kara GET A JOB--at least until their daughter graduates high school. And why on earth do they employ a cleaning person when there are only the three of them living there and money is supposedly tight? Even when Saul points out that Kara is a master at pretending to love people she detests, he presents it like that is an admirable social skill rather than obvious two-faced behavior. Husband, wife, and daughter all appear to be snobs, looking down their noses on the two realtors who are trying to sell their house and help them buy another, both of whom are only doing their jobs--and yet Saul seems unaware of this in his presentation. But I digress. If you want a quick, suspenseful page turner but don't care too much about character development, then pick this one up.

A little disappointing
A little different from the typical John Saul book. In that respect I liked it. Otherwise, I was disappointed with the ending. Half way through I suspected who the 'bad guy' was, and was positive by the time about a quarter of it was left. When I found out I was right, I wasn't impressed. We never really find out why one of the suspects is acting so suspicious, but I kind of have an idea why (though I don¿t want to spoil the book for anyone by explaining my theory here). Still it would have been nice for Saul to clarify why that character did behave so suspiciously. And I have a sneaking suspicion there's going to be a sequel (or should I say prequel) that shows us the entire journal of the killer in novel form. Though I could be wrong. It¿s just in the end when the killer mentions how his journal should explain everything, it¿s a little bit of a forewarning to another book. It was a predictable story and not up to par. It kept me interested, and it was suspenseful, but towards the end when I realized that the conclusion wouldn¿t live up to the rest of the book, I found myself let down and bored. So many ill-placed red-herrings made it trite and hard to enjoy, so I wouldn¿t recommend it to any hard-core mystery fans. It was suspenseful, and if you¿re easily amused and would enjoy reading about a twisted dual-personality (cheap excuse for making it ¿harder¿ to tell who the bad guy is) then please read it. Otherwise, stick to something along the lines of ¿The Manhattan Hunt Club,¿ one of John Saul's best books to date.

not his best but pretty good
I much prefer vintage John Saul and this book is nothing like his old and truly creepy titles. It was good, fast paced but a bit messy, too.

John Saul NOT at his best!
This is definitely not the vintage John Saul that made you sleep with the lights on at night. It was slow, and very predictable. I had to force mysef to finish reading it. If you've never read his earlier works, you might be entertained by it.
