    Many sides of Pete Fountain

Clarinetist Pete Fountain has recorded since approx. 1950, and this compilation covers 1950 to 1983, from small combos to small bands. Nothing, however, really reflects his years with Lawrence Welk. My favorites are the earliest cuts, which feature George Gerard and Charlie Teagarden playing great trumpet. Sound is reflective of transfers possibly from 78's, still, adequate. Louis Armstrong and his All Stars recorded my favorite "Tin Roof Blues" live while on a European tour, still, this performance by Fountain runs it a close second. The cuts with the Mardi Gras Strutters are fine, though without the "bite" of the combo cuts. The vocal group on the last cut is, to me, unecessary. All in all, an excellent Fountain retrospective.

Great music, very poor sound quality.

Well, this CD has some great songs on it, unfortunately it sounds like they were recorded in a tunnel. Not only that, many sound grainy and scratchy. I understand, of course, that most of these songs are old recordings, but I've heard older that were restored better.
