A work of beautiful tragedy
Few translations ever do the original work justice. However, lovers of Hesse have managed to capture the essence of illustrative prose and made a seamless transition from German to English. This book is a reflection of Hesse's soul and should be read before his later works. It is rewarding to watch his style grow as he discovers Eastern ways of life. As much as I love all his books, this is my pure favorite.

Good reading when you're in a melancholic mood
This book deals with fitting in to different parts of society, searching for romance (and failing), being an anti-social alcoholic, and finding truth and originality in a befriended cripple. Highly uplifting if not depressing. It is redundant to say that Hesse is an insightful, penetrating writer.
