For those who drive through the New Jersey Pine Barrens, this book provides interesting background information.

I cross through the Pine Barrens on my way to the New Jersey Shore and have often wondered what's behind the trees and why us the area unique. John McPhee provides some of the answers by way of a serious of connected stories/tales. His descriptions of the characters that populate the Pine Barrens and their way of life gave me an appreciation of the area that I wasn't expecting when I purchased the book. Next time I pass through, I will be sure to stop and learn more about the individuals through personal contact.

One of my reasons for purchasing the book was to learn about some of the unique plants and animals of the area. I was disappointed that this spect was not covered in more depth.
