Love the series

I absolutly loved this series. I thought the military presence mixed with the action packed zombie and raider encounters was a great combination. There was tons of suspence and death so it had an emotion wrenching quality to it like no other. Greatly reccomend it. Thank...

Arf. I wanted to like this book, but it was resolutely determined to be the worst read of the last ten years. I read lots of zombie and horror genre, and I allow a wide berth when it comes to plot contrivance, etc., but this thing reads like a short story that needs an editor.

We begin with a hyperbolic introduction. Our heroes are two groups of characters tied to each other on the first page and destined to... never, ever meet for the next 249 exclamation point-riddled pages. Massive plot holes don't even get a cursory explanation. Mood is dictated by punctuation marks. Characters and relations are hinted at and never developed. These are the high points.

It reads like an earnest creative writing workshop outline/first draft with one sequence roughly fleshed-out. Or, some kind of timed writing excercise with an ending so ridiculously abrupt that it was inspired by nothing more than the classroom bell ringing.

Skip it.

    Fabulous!

I am a big fan of The Walking Dead and have been looking for good zombie books. I am through with the first in this series and am starting the second now. Recht does a great job beginning the story in Africa and not giving out what is happening in other places around the world until necessary. Like The Walking Dead you never know who is the next to go down with the virus or grabbed by the zombies. Very easy reading and will not want to put the book down.

I liked the book. It was an easy read and the characters were okay. Unfortunately, many of the characters were only 2 dimensional. There were too many times where it seemed that the characters didn't really get the end of the world, even after they'd gone through major trama. The scenario and the implications were done pretty well. I just wish the characters would have been a little less caricatures.
