Nothng really turns out the way we want it

After reading Plan B I thought over my life in a great way. Like the character in the book, I'm also in my thirties and a crossroad in my life. I related a lot to the character of Lindsey. Bouncing from job to job not really knowing what she want in the life. And most of all, the guy she liked the most wasn't really sure if he wanted her. Also, I haven't known a 'true friendship' story like this since I saw the movie, 'St. Elmo's Fire'. I was happy at the end of the book when the main character, Ben while closed the door on the past and looked forward to loving his future.

    I'm only 20-years-old so I know I didn't understand the characte

I'm only 20-years-old so I know I didn't understand the characters' feelings about their life as much as those past the 30-mark did, but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it.  It's funny, smart, and most importantly entertaining.  I tend to grow bored with books that don't involve murder or supernatural events, but this one kept me through the end.  Just ordered another book by Tropper, can't wait to read it.

    more from this reviewer

    Relevance

I think that if I would've read this book 5 years ago I wouldn't have been able to relate to it the way I can now. Being 28 I can identify with the characters and where they were in their lives. I found the plot to be a bit trite but not entirely unrealistic.

    Perfect Summer Reading!

I needed to take a break from the world of Academia - wanted to read something fun - but not junky. Browsing through Barnes and Nobles I found 'Plan B.' Looked interesting, proved to be a fun, page turning book. The writing is very authentic and believable, hitting close to home. Finished it in 2 days, ended with a smile and a little tear. What more could you want from a summer read?

Can't have enough of the 80's

The timing for this book's release is nearly perfect, as 80's pop culture has recently found retro popularity. But unlike nearly every other book you read that examines pop culture, this book has a sincere, unpretentious heart. The narrator, Ben, is a likeable Everyman who can't quite get over the urge to keep living in the 80's. The theme, however, of this book takes a serious examination of Generation X's growing fascination with celebrity. Toward the beginning, one of the characters, Lindsey, says, 'Our generation is the first for whom pop culture is our sole frame of reference.' Real life experience is compared to and validated by the world of television and film. Paralleling this theme is a plot that concerns four friends exercising their concern for a fifth friend who is an international film star--a veritable icon of pop culture. The ending will leave you smiling and cheering for Jonathan Tropper's ability to find hope and peace in what other's have called an angry generation of people. A fine debut, by all respects. I look forward to more work from Tropper.
