A great beginning hit list for exploring new music. I don't know

A great beginning hit list for exploring new music.
I don't know a thing about this apparently controversial author, but this book is great.  Granted, at this point, it's a little out of date, but it's still a good way to get started with music in genres other than just Top 40 or the bands you already know.  Some of the playlists are cross-genre, too, with a theme.  I found those to be fun, even if I didn't always agree with all the inclusions.
The bottom-line is this book is just what it says it is, a book of playlists.  I've owned it for a couple of years now and still refer to it.

Judge the book, not the author

Ultragrrrl must be one of the most disdained people in the history of music journalism. It goes without saying that her blog often functions as a hype machine. But let's look at the music selected for this book instead of allowing prejudice against its author to reign free. The way Ultra has chosen to cover such a wide variety of genres is awesome -- there really is something for everyone. And if there's one thing the author can't be accused of, it's being elitist. Combined with this, she also has the input of lots of great musicians to help her out (members Idlewild and Interpol to name a few). Ultra isn't trying to write anything heavy here -- the book itself simply functions as a handbook of playlists for beginning DJs and it serves its intended purpose well. Even if you don't share Ultra's personal taste, you have to give her credit for this book. She really tries to reach people of every concievable persuasion. So, even if you don't like SPIN (and newsflash: Ultra doesn't even work for them anymore) or Sarah Lewitinn herself, this book is a great guide for anyone beginning to get into music.
