I am reading all of Michael Connelly's books in order, which is the best way to read his novels, and The Poet is his fifth book and first to not have his famous character, Harry Bosch. The Poet is narrated by crime reporter Jack McEvoy, a character just as great as Bosch. I never reveal plot in my reviews but I will say this, each time I read a Connelly novel, I realize why he is my favorite mystery writer. His plots keep me up all night wanting to read more. The Poet is a major highlight in Connelly's career.

Not my favorite.

I am having a hard time getting into this one. I usually love Michael Connelly, but this is not my favorite of his. About halfway through, so hopefully it will pick up...

    Good idea. Bad execution.

I just finished the book and i have so many questions. Not good ones. Most have to do with plot continuity. I thought it was a decent read until I got to the end. I think the writer got a little too impressed with himself. Would not recommend.

    That Was an Ending?

A story is only as good as its ending. If the ending fails, an otherwise good story is lost. The Poet was a fun and interesting read for most of the way through. But when I learned the identity of the perpetrator of the murders, I almost laughed. I was also angy because it seemed I wasted a lot of time reading an otherwise fairly good book. The ending was improbable beyond words, and really made very little sense. Sure, it was a surprise, as Connelly intended, but a surprise doesn't mean it works. The ending was so bad I'm frankly surprised that the published didn't force Connelly to write a different ending.

HOW DID THIS AUTHOR WIN AN EDGAR AWARD??

THIS BOOK, ALTHOUGH INTERESTING AT TIMES, IS YET ANOTHER CLICHE RIDDEN MYSTERY. THE SERIAL KILLER IS JUST SOOOO POORLY DEVELOPED HERE(NOT THAT I THINK THERE'S ANYTHING LEFT TO BE DONE WITH THIS OVERLY USED MENACE IN LIT.). THE BIGGEST FAILING IS THE LOVE STORY, ONE QUESTION, WHY, WHY WHY??? IT MAKES NO SENSE AND MAKES THE LEAD INVESTIGATOR SEEM LIKE A COMPLETE MORON. ALSO, THE MAIN CHARACTER JACK GIVES AWAY SO MUCH INFO. TO ANYONE HE TALKS TO. WOULD THE FBI REALLY WORK WITH HIM NOMATTER WHAT? HIGHLY IMPLAUSIBLE STORYLINE, NOT WORTH IT!!!!
