A very informative book for digital photographers and those who want to be

Portrait and Candid Photography Photo Workshop by Erin Manning is not only a useful and informative book on digital photography, but also a very good read. The author's style is lively and engaging and, most importantly, she conveys highly technical information in a way that is accessible to beginners without 'talking down' to more experienced digital photographers. While she has great advice for relating to the person being photographed (no matter the age), I found especially useful the information and tips she provided for taking pictures of infants and small children and the chapter on action photographs. The photographs in the book are beautiful--strong compositions, novel ways of seeing, illustrative of her points, and always evocative of the personality of her subjects. Erin used me as a reader of her book while it was in development, because I was a neophyte digital photographer and could let her know when I did not understand something she had written. For purposes of disclosure, I must also let you know that I am the (proud) mother of Erin Manning and delighted to see her good work in print.

Highly recommended and the perfect book for beginning digital photographers. Erin Manning is a great communicator.

This book is a second edition of the book, and provides updated information and new photographs. Unlike so many photography books I've read, Portrait and Candid Photography Photo Workshop provides information in language that is clear and lively. I've followed Erin's teaching since she was featured on DIY's Whole Picture, and recently acquired her Digital Photography 101 DVD. As a result, I am finally more confident in using my camera and am taking more interesting photographs.

    Easy read with wonderful tips!

Erin Manning is a very 'user friendly' writer with great tips that you can immediately put to use! Also there are 'assignments' that you can send in for review as your skills progress. Feedback on your work is given! Those who love Scott Kelby will also love Erin Manning!

There are better books out there

I bought this book because I wanted to get a head start on learning how to use my DSLR Camera. Honestly, I feel like this book is seriously over rated. It's very broad, trying to cover literally every single topic in photography- I found that in the end, that was information I could get for free on the internet. I ended up returning this book because it didn't provide me with any more useful information that what I could figure out on my own.
