Better then nothing but superficial and flawed

The author is not a native Portuguese speaker, and did not co-write the book with someone who is. That was my first hint that there may be something lacking. Her credentials were that she spent three years there (she's not a language teacher or any other kind of teacher either). As another reviewer noted, she uses "d" to describe how to pronounce an "r". I think she feels that is the closest letter to describing the pronunciation, but it's not, and if you used her exact pronunciations in Brazil you'd be bound to get a few chuckles. Luckily I've been there and used other materials before I read the book so I knew the difference.

Also, she repeats the phonetic pronunciation of the words she introduces every time she uses each word throughout the book - nice way to pad the pages. In some cases when the same word was repeated, she changed not only the phonetic pronunciation but even the accented syllable! So it caused me to distrust the pronunciation and consult with a dictionary. It does give you some insight into Brazilian culture and basic language information, but if you use it as a stand-alone guide you're in trouble.

Great Book to communicate in Portuguese

I read this book before going to Brazil in a business trip. It actually helped me to communicate with the local people in a practical way, not perfectly but I was able to communicate for basic activities. This book provided me with the common phrases used while taking a taxi, dining in a restaurant, check in or out in a hotel. To go to the next level, you need to get exposed to listening to the Brazilian people in order to understand them better. Fortunately, as mentioned in the book, Brazilian people are really friendly and are willing to help you practice or improve your Portuguese. I recommended this book to my fellow Americans traveling to Brazil.

Exposure to common words, but beware of pronunciation guide

This book does a good job of introducing common Portuguese words for someone new to the language. My main problem with the book is the pronunciation guide related to the letter "r". For all word positions except the first or last letter in a word, this book says that an "r" should be pronounced with a "d" sound in all cases. This conflicts with the pronunciation of "r" I hear/see used in the Rosetta Stone Portuguese course, the Pimsleur Portuguese course, the Harper-Collins Portuguese dictionary, words spoken on Brazilian news shows on Dish Network, etc. My suggestion is to use the book to learn everyday words, but don't use this book as the only source for pronunciation guidance.
