The best Aussie book on the Western Front?
There've been a lot of them, that's for sure. Books on Gallipoli and the various key battles of The Front in WW1 by Aussie historians. Then Bennett comes out of nowhere with a cracker that is not only researched in painstaking detail but is also human in its point of view and responses. With an encyclopaedic knowledge of this legendary battle and the disastrous forces that led to it, with a relative who was almost there but appears to have sensibly slipped away on any given occasion, Bennett takes the personal stories of officers and all kinds of men thrown into the grisly maw of this war of wars, and weaves them incontrovertibly into the tapestry of terror that was innocuously named The Western Front. Bloody marvellous. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
