Great first book on Android development

It is a really good book to help you dive into Android development, even if you come from a different background. Mine is MS platform development (Visual Studio, C#, ASP.NET), so I appreciated the information on how to deal with Eclipse, configure the Android SDK and plugins (but the Java professional of course does not need all that). The book is comprehensive, with detailed explanations and plenty of examples. It's also very well organized, so it can serve as a reference manual, even after you went through all the chapters and examples. I thought at first I'll be re-selling it after I'm done with it (it's darned expensive), but I'm keeping it now.

    more from this reviewer

Not very useful. Buy a different book.

I am an experience embedded software engineer tasked to integrate Android into our new products, so I need to learn Android in a week. I bought this book and it is not very helpful - if I had not already read the documentation that comes with the Android SDK I'd be completley lost. The author skips over imporatnat topics, pointing the reader to online explanations and then dwells on how to enter a trivial application into the system - rather than explaining why the programming elements are there. Lots of not very useful programming fluff. I read half the book and hurried back to B&N to buy a better book.

    Examples Mostly Broken

The text is great, but most of the code examples are broken.

    Just one big redirector

3 and half chapters in and I have yet to right much code. It basically sayd to downloan the code as the samples have just function signatures and then rest is not shown. Pretty just referes you to the online google docs as it said "this book will not go into great detail but I'll refer you to..." this book does not go into much detail on anything. It is a boring read and I am very disappointed by this purchase. I have had it since mid June and I am relunctant to pick it up.

My development back ground is C# with some JAVA. I am very interesting in learning the Android system, but this book will not get me there.

Excellent, Thorough Coverage Of Android Application Development

Reto Meier does an excellent job, providing thorough coverage of all aspects of Android application development in Java. He covers core areas of Android development as well as less frequently used portions of the Android and Google APIs. It is clear that Reto has advanced expertise with the subject matter. (Thankfully,) the author makes heavy use of source code examples to illustrate his topics. Highly recommended.
