I discovered this book through a snippet of a radio interview with the author several weeks ago. The concept of looking at American cultural development from the Pilgrims to present day through 13 diverse books is compelling. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. This book is astounding. Not only do you get a brief but broad look at American History and the currents of thought that run through our last 400 years, but the literary analysis is wonderful. From The Federalist Papers to Huckleberry Finn to Dr. Spock's child care book, Mr. Parini gives you an upfront seat to the authors, their lives, the immediacy of the world in which they lived. Best of all, despite Mr. Parini's obvious erudition, the writing is clear, breezy and accessible.
This should be required reading for High School American History and American Literature courses. I love it.
