J.D. Robb writes another sublime futuristic police procedural

She gets a phone call and leaves the house almost instantly afterward with her two guns on her person. Her weapons do not help her as she is ambushed on the stairwell by someone she recognizes. She is brought to the basement where she is revived before she is killed. The year is 2060 and NYPD Police Lieutenant Eve Dallas catches the case.

Eve arrives at the crime scene and examines the body before turning it over. To her horror, she recognizes the victim as veteran Detective Amarylis Coltraine who recently joined the New York City police force from Atlanta. Ammy broke off with her boyfriend Alex Riker, the son of psychopathic killer Max, whom Eve and her husband Roarke got put away on an off planet cage Alex, who is in New York coincidently swears he never killed anyone hen Eve questions him . . The killer taunts Eve by sending her Ammy¿s badge and guns with an attached gloating letter. Determined Eve investigates seemingly anyone who knew Ammy which include peers in the two police departments, former lovers, and even current boyfriend Chief Medical Examiner Morris, and friends. Eve concludes to hers shock that the hit was carried out by two un-subs in what is an ever widening conspiracy.

J.D. Robb writes another sublime futuristic police procedural starring the heroine who after numerous cases (books) still believes strongly in justice for the victims and will go the extra kilometers to achieve her objective. The returning characters like the ME play critical roles in Eve¿s investigation while Roarke plays a somewhat lesser part than usual though he as always there for his beloved. Fans will fully appreciate this fantastic entry as five decades into the future Eve methodically step by step conducts her investigation. Eve is powerful woman who lets nobody get away with murder

Great Storys

To date I have read all the In Death Series, I love them all and reread them. I think in reading an article somewhere and its true that if Eve and Roarke have a child that is the end of the series. We cannot let that happen yet. These are the only books that I buy in hardback. I would love the whole series out in hardback. So Nora/JD. Robb keep up the good work. Since I read Nora Roberts and yes have a whole book case just of her work I can recommend anything she has written. (I prefer anything written in the last 5 years) She just gets better and better.

Promises in Death by J.D. Robb

I don't know how J.D. Robb/Nora Roberts does it, but she consistently writes novels with just the right mix of emotion, sexual tension, wry humor, and mystery to keep me riveted every darn time! "Promises in Death" had me flipping the pages as fast as I could read to try and figure out 'who done it' and feed my Roarke fix.

This time the death is personal...not because the vic is a cop, but because she's the cop that Li Morris (coroner extraordinaire) was seriously involved with, and Li's pain is difficult for Eve to face because he's one of 'hers'. When the clues reveal ties to an old enemy of both Eve and Roarke, it seems too good to be true...and it may well be.

The mystery was intricate and well-plotted and I didn't figure out the bad guy til the author led me to it. There were twists that I didn't expect, and they all linked together in a tightly woven plot. Eve and Roarke were 'mag' as were the rest of the supporting cast which seemed to include all of Eve and Roarke's friends from earlier books. The scenes regarding the bachelor party and bridal shower had me laughing out loud and wishing I were there to watch.

I don't want to give too much away, but I will say that this is my favorite 'in Death' so far...at least until the next release!

Great addictive characters

The "In Death" series is addictive, and when I finish, just start over again from the beginning. I now buy the hard cover only. It is facinating to see the relationship of Eve and Roarke growing and evolving, as well as the relationships of and with the other characters,
Need an extra book to get thru the summer months tho! Keep writing.

Another Thrill by J.D. Robb

Another great J.D.Robb novel. Dallas and Roarke are a romantic, sexy, thrilling married couple. I love their relationship and Robb does a great job intertwining them with a murder mystery, all the needed parts of an enthralling read. Had to keep reading until it was done and I can't wait for the next one.

Getting better all the time

I have read every "In Death" book by Robb. When it's time for a new one, I go back to #1 and read the whole series from the beginning in anticipation of the next adventure. I think that in "Promises" we see Eve maturing and growing in her personal and professional life. She and Roarke are easier with each other instead of jumping from one extreme to another. She isn't as uptight and close to the edge as previously and the two years of marriage are making her a more well rounded person. She accepts situations differently rather than fighting tooth and nail. Her friendships with other women are interesting and broaden the scope of the story. Can't wait for the next one and hope this series NEVER ends!

Promises...to keep

Eva Dallas never needed or allowed herself to have friends other than a very few, namely Feeney and Mavis. Indeed, trust and companionship came very hard to this "lost soul" Book by book, throughout the entire Death series, Eve's life expands to include many wonderful characters, friends with whom she builds trust,loyalty and compassion...including, of course, Roarke. The word promise is something special in Eve's vocabulary, her word is her code of living. She will do everything to back up her words, and the stories that evolve are something special...to me even life-affirming. Promises In Death is a culmination of Eve's intense loyalty and integrity. It is intensely pleasurable to see Eve and her many friends "the smart girls" solve the mystery. The byplay between Eve and her friends is worth reading over and over again. I am happy to see Eve's growth, acceptance and love for all the people she now has in her life. No doubt I love this heroine and her latest promise.

Have read the whole series and can honestly say this episode really brought out new charachteristics in each character.

There was a sense of being more involved with these characters - I don't know why but for me I think it was the way JD Robb presents them. She brought out so many new sides to Dallas for me and Rourke also. I thoroughly enjoy the interaction with Mavis's baby and hope someday that Dallas gets to experience motherhood.

J.D.Robb is the best.

Nora Roberts writing as J.D. Robb is the best there is. I have been reading fiction my entire life and there is no one to compare. She captures the essence of human nature in her primary characters Eve Dallas and Roarke. You can be guaranteed a fantastic read with any of her books, but the "Naked in Death" series remains my favorite. As prolific as Ms.Roberts is, I'm always thinking, "Hurry, I want another".

I found Eve by chance

In 2008 I was browsing through Barnes & Noble sale books and happened upon the hard cover Memory In Death. I had no idea who Eve Dallas was and had never read any Nora Roberts books. I went home and started reading and became hopelessly addicted. I breezed through that book and every single JD Robb book written. I went all the way back to the beginning and started with the first and read them in the order that they were written. I've also gotten many of my friends "hooked" on Eve and Roarke and their adventures.
I really like the way each book refers casually back to the past cases with very little time elapsing in between. That way they can go on for a long time without the characters getting older too fast.
I can hardly wait to get involved in the next case.

I FOUND A SHORT STORY BY ROBB AND FELL IN LOVE WITH EVE

I have become a books on CD fan. I enjoy listening to the novels while cleaning the house, working online,driving, making handmade baskets,taking care of my elderly relatives. I highly recommend the series in book form or the CD's the series has a fun group of richly developed characters, interesting plots, compelling story lines. The only fault I have with the CD version is the lack of sound effects, traffic noises, door slams,pistol reports, some of the small things that would breath life into the story and make listening exciting.
I have been able to find some of the older stories in the series and you can start with the latest and work your way back and the listening is still great

J.D. Robb is fantastic

I have read every one of the books in this series and they are all awesome! Eve Dallas is a great character with faults and a sense of right and wrong. Roarke is my dream man! I can't wait for the latest book to come out in Feb. I am sure it will be another big hit! I recommend all of the books in the "In Death" series for great reading. You won't be able to put them down.

Promise of a Good Novel Kept

This was my first read of the J.D. Robb series and it was fun having just recently went to NYC on vacation. It really places you in the city, setting, and what is really going on in the moment to catch a killer with a motive. Enjoyable to read most definitely.

Too Much of the Same Idea

CD-Unabridged: I hated not liking this one too much. It was the same plot and scenes. It was the same character with the same dialog. Coltrane, a minor minor character, who is murdered. Dallas has to solve the murder with the help of Roarke. Same 2.5 sex scenes. This series needs to retire. Peabody and McNab aren't fun anymore. There were too many conversations with Morris. It was just a bunch of filler. I guess Robb's publisher expects a certain page count.

Highy Recommended

I am absolutely enthralled with J D Robb and the In Death Series. When I first started reading the series a couple of years ago, I was not aware it went so far back. So 6 months ago, I started at the beginning and ordered a few every few months, reading them all in order. I am totally hooked. Eve Dallas and Rourke are the best characters in fiction. I am now up to the brand new book out 11-10 then I'll be back to holding my breath for the next one to come out. J D Robb, keep the In Death Series going. They are the best reading out there!

Good Book

Really liked this book!

Wonderful escape!

I started reading the 'In Death' series before anyone kew it was written by Nora Roberts. J.D. Robb fast became on of my favorite authors. Lt. Eve Dallas is one of my favorite characters. She is feisty, damaged, and strong. She is a survivor. If you want a book that will take you to the future and out of your head, you gotta read this book and the whole series.

In this latest installment, we are shown the side of a main charachter we have not seen before. I am not going to get into the storyline because it would ruin the preceeding books for you. Start at the beginning and savor each one! Enjoy!

J.D. Robb is Back on Track

Having read all the "In Death" series books, this was one of the best ones to date. To be honest until this book, a couple of the books right before this one seemed to have the same flow and was getting monotonous. But this one, featuring Dr. Morris' girlfriend, Detective Amaryllis Coltraine as the victim murdered, was thrilling. Nora Roberts was right on with the emotions Dr. Morris was feeling, my heart bled with him. Great job for Ms. Roberts bringing the passion and thrill back to the "In Death" series!

A Killer Series

I have been a fan of Eve and Roarke for years and haven't missed a book in the series. I have to restrain myself from buying the books in hardback and wait for the mass paperback version. As always, the book is worth the wait. J.D Robb (aka Nora Roberts) delivers an engrossing story of my favorite cop and her handsome husband. It seems that we are learning more about the personal side of these two in this and the past two books. I like that a lot and I like the social situations that Eve finds herself in which are sweet and insightful for the reader. Eve usually gets "rescued" from these events with a call to duty; she is evolving, rounding-out, as the books evolve. The relationship with her husband is always sweet, romantic and sexy. Her co-workers and friends, and even her nemesis butler/majordomo, that round out her family give us hope for the child that remains within Eve and drives what she does in her work.
I can't wait for the next book! Will Eve and Roarke ever have or adopt a child of their own?!
