A Must For Beginner and Nostalgic Puerto Rican Cooks

As I grew up in Puerto Rico, my mother used Cocina Criolla as a resource for all kinds of recipes. Mother has always been an excellent cook, so I knew the book was good. When I got married in 1982, Pavillion Limoges where we had our wedding list, gave me an autographed copy of Mrs. Valldejuli's book. Twenty-four years later, the book has a preferential spot in my kitchen in Colorado. It also shows how much it has been used by the 'aging spots' inside its pages. With Cocina Criolla I have learned to make my childhood favorites like 'pastelillos volados', 'funche', 'mantecaditos', and other wonderful dishes. I have purchased Puerto Rican Cookery as a wedding gift for some of my anglo friends that enjoy my cooking, knowing that Mrs. Valldejuli's book will take care of their cravings for 'Boricua' food.

    A reviewer

This book was given to me to read by a co-worker who I would share recipes with. I am Puerto Rican but born in Phildelphia. I never been to Puerto Rico and I cook spanish food but did not know how to do some dishes. This book has taken me to Puerto Rico with out leaving home. I plan to buy four books and pass them on to my three children so they can share the love with their children and contiune the tradition of home cooked spanish meals.

I love this book, I bought it in a little bookstore in the Lower eastside NY I fell in love with the book and the Store. I myself am Puerto Rican and I know these Recipes by heart but I always love to try different ways of making certain dishes. I lost my copy and am going to buy another. I just Love it and I'm a cook and a book Lover, food is my Passion.

One of the Best Cook Books from Puerto Rico

I recommend this book to anyone that wants to try new cuisine or just remember grandmas Puerto Rican cooking. I got my copy from my mother wile in college. It was the lifesaver for many of us college Puertoriquenos absent from the island and homesick. All the recipes we did came out close to what was expected as some of the ingredients we were able to get at the local grocer were either not fresh (spices and herbs) or not the correct ones in cans (Puerto Rican can food products).

    Great!

So far, every Puerto Rican I know seems to have this cookbook somewhere in their house. The recipes are very good. There is absolutely no disappointment here. The only way any recipe could ever come out wrong is if you try to compensate fresh ingredients for CANNED ones throughout the recipe. A few canned ingredients are acceptable but not everything...or else you will come out with a mess. (In the old days canned food wasn't the way to go...and these recipes are based on that same principal...there's a big difference.) I greatly recommend this cookbook to anyone wanting to try something new or those who are in search of old 'lost' recipes.

    An oldie but goodie.

This is a great book with classic Puerto Rican recipes. I have this book in Spanish and English. I just purchased this book for my son, who has moved away from home and wanted to be able to cook the things I make at home. This book is a classic. The Spanish first edition is the book my mother learned how to cook when she got married over 50 years ago. Recipes are easy to follow and the food is great.

    Great Cookbook!

Puerto Rican cookery contains many of the ingredients with which we are familiar and some delightful local ones with which we are not. This makes it a great inspiration in adding new ingredients to old favorite recipes. This second copy is a gift!

Bought the book after returning from a family trip to PR to visit family down there.
