I usually view How To books as reference and not as reading material. Purr-fect Recipes for a Healthy Cat by Lisa Shiroff is an exception to that rule. It is lively and well written as well as packed with information. It not only contains many interesting recipes but is an excellent primer on feline health. Was this review helpful? I have had cats most of my life but I learned all sorts of interesting and useful things about our furry friends. Author Lisa Shiroff connects feline diet and health in a compelling and clear way. While I’m unlikely to start my kitties on a raw food diet, she has convinced me of the benefits of natural food as opposed to processed commercial cat food.
I highly recommend this book to feline fanciers everywhere whether or not you want to cook for them.

With all the recalls on pet food lately, the topic of natural, homemade food for pets seems particularly pertinent…whether you’ve decided to go “whole hog” or just want to make some treats for your tabby. But there’s much more than just recipes in this easy-reading book. The author, without bias, presents all sides of the cat food debate, from what you’re really getting when you buy most commercial cat foods to the special needs of chronically ill felines. Best of all, the book is actually entertaining to read, with fun facts and case studies breaking up the well-presented information. The author knows cats, and that fact shines through, page after page. If you love cats, this book should be on your bookshelf. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. When I first began the "Purr-fect Recipes for a Healthy Cat
When I first began the "Purr-fect Recipes for a Healthy Cat" I must admit I was rather leery. (The book begins by talking about a cat named after the Roman goddess of the moon.) But as I read on, I was pleasantly surprised. The book not only delves into beneficial foods for your cat, but it also explores topics including litter box training, eye care, hair and skin, nails, teeth, toys and so much more. It offers fun, informative "break-out boxes" with topics such as "How to tell if a cat is happy" and "Famous cats in history." I would recommend the book to any loving cat owner or prospective owner because of its comprehensive information on cat care. I must admit I have yet to use one of the 101 recipes listed, but I have plans to bake recipe 67, "Oaty catnip cookies." Yum.Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Invaluable reference tool for cat owners
Purr-fect Recipes for a Healthy Cat is, at first glance, simply a recipe book for making your own homemade cat food. However, it is actually much more. The recipes are there, ranging from the easy to somewhat more complex, but it also contains invaluable reference information that would be useful to any cat lover. It covers a range of potential problems your kitty can have during its life and how to prevent them. It also covers the whys and wherefores of cat nutrition, thus providing a better understanding of the recipes, which are near the end of the book. With several fun anecdotes and picture boxes to draw the reader's attention to import points, this is truly an invaluable reference book for cat owners everywhere. Was this review helpful? The beginning of this book guides you through chapters of what a healthy cat looks like, what vitamins a cat needs, foods to avoid, cat care and how to address specific health conditions. Now we are ready to prepare our cat's natural menu. Lisa Shiroff guides us through the ingredients needed, the shopping and the preparations for delicious meals your cat will love. I couldn't wait to try some of the easy to cook recipes like Chicken Fried Rice, which included 1lb chicken cubed, 2 tbs. chicken fat, 2 tbs. zucchini, 1 egg, 1C rice, and 1 tbs eggshell powder. When the cooking was done I let my finicky cat try it and she loved it, if fact I make it, freeze it and serve it to her every week.
Since trying that 1st recipe, I have gone almost totally natural for my cat only feeding her a little bit of dry food per week. I have only prepared half of over 100 recipes and my cat has loved all of them. I can hardly wait to try all the recipes. Since feeding my cat natural food from the recipes in this book I have noticed that my cat is happier, more playful, and her coat is shinier than ever. I highly recommend Purr-fect Recipes for a Healthy Cat 101 Natural Cat Food & Treat Recipes to Make Your Cat Happy for all cat owners who want only the best for their cat.
