A promising first book
Following in the tradition of Conrad and Nabokov, who learned to write magnificently in their adopted English tongue, Hemon reminds us just how interesting and beautiful our language can be. Sometimes it takes an outsider (Hemon is Bosnian) to revive interest in finely crafted literature. His sentences are playful, and he shares his love of writing with us unashamedly. His excessive use of adjectives can be forgiven in so young a writer, especially since his tales are so thoughtful. These stories are a fine start from a new voice--'Islands' and 'The Sorge Spy Ring' stand out in particular--and they promise greater things in the future.
