    WRONG TITLE!!!

This is a great CD set, but this is THE ORIGINAL MOVIE CAST (OMC). If you want the Broadway cast (OBC) just look for it. You can even check. I have both CD sets, and they are both amazing, but I do think that this is the MOVIE and not the BROADWAY

    Outstanding

Although a fan of the original recording, I found this soundtrack to be immensely moving. I highly reccomend that anyone who appreciates the music of Jonathan Larson take a listen to this version. While some songs from Broadway-Rent were excluded from the movie and this soundtrack, interestingly enough, songs not featured in the movie are on this cd. "Halloween" and "Goodbye Love," sung by the movie's cast, do not appear on-screen. Possibly those scenes will appear in the Rent DVD extras? Make sure to include this soundtrack in your holiday shopping this year.

    Trying too hard

I absolutely love the original RENT soundtrack, and was disappointed that the vocalists went out of their way to sing the songs differently than they originally had, when the original soundtrack left little to be improved upon. The resulting sound, while still enjoyable, can, at times, sound slightly like an amateur experimenting with different rhythms, and while you can't really accuse the newcomers (non-OBC) of being "affected" in their singing, they try much too hard to carve their own way and be different. If you're only going to buy one CD, buy the OBC CD, but this is still a decent recording.

    No Day But Today

As a "Rent Head", I expected some big improvements on the stellar Original Broadway Cast Album. Some of it succeeds (Rosario Dawson is a HUGE improvement over Daphne Rubin-Vega), but most of it lacks the urgency and energy of the OBCA. It's still an enjoyable listen, however, and there are several standouts, including Dawson's take on "Out Tonight". But I was totally blown away by Tracie Thoms! I only previously knew her as a funny comedian and the hilarious sidekick on "Wonderfalls", but I now know her as a phenomenal vocalist. Speaking of phenomenal, Idina Menzel is as amazing as ever (although I had to wonder if the producers asked her pull back a bit on "Over the Moon" as it is not as exciting as on the OBCA). The duet between Menzel and Thoms ("Take Me or Leave Me") is a definite showstopper.

    A Cut Above The Rest

I must say after seeing the movie last night and listening to the soundtrack, I tend to favor the new cast recording a little better than the original. While I am sad at the abscence of Daphne Rubin-Vega from this soundtrack, I was glad that there was more music and less filler. The removal of "Contact" hepled me to appreciate the story more. I have seen the stage version twice-once on Broadway and plan to see the mvie a few more times! If anyone has not seen either the movie or the play- see both you won't regret it! There's No Day But Today!

    This is amazing!

Of course, thsi is not the original cast. Nothing is better than that. I'd like to comment on one of the reviewers below who said "it's just not the same." Well, of course it's not! this is almost 10 years later! We can't expect it to be the same. Daphne is too old (and pregnant) to play Mimi anymore. She no longer "looks like she is 16". Fredi, too, is too old. This album is AMAZING. yes, not all songs from teh OBC are on it, but so much effort was put into this album, and it just couldn't be better. (The movie would simply be too long if they kept all the voicemails and tuneups)

Not what I wanted, but amazing all the same...

I wanted the original broadway cast, but my mom ended up buying this instead. However, although it doesn't hold up to the original, it is quite impressive in its own right. Rosario Dawson's voice is amazing! I think it's good to own both this and the original, but if you're only going for one, get the original.
