    stunning debut

Bill Deasy has made his name on the singer-songwriter circuit and now he has ventured into the literary world. Thank goodness he did! This novel, Ransom Seaborn, reads like one of his songs. Deasy's common themes of water, redemption, and flawed heroes are present here. Ransom Seaborn is a dark coming of age story marked by despair and tragedy. It's a deceptively quick read, but like Deasy's lyrics, this story keeps working on your head long after you've closed the book. I've started reading it for a second time. I highly recommend tracking down Deasy's work with the Gathering Field, particularly Reliance and So Close to Home, as well as his first solo album, Spring Lies Waiting as all three fit very well with this story.

First novel, hopefully not his last

Bill Deasy has been writing songs for years and Ransom Seaborn is the natural extension of his music. You don't have to be familiar with his songs to enjoy the story. The book certainly stands on its own, but like his music, this novel will continue to work on you long after you've closed the cover. The characters are as real and flawed as any of your friends making their redemption incredibly personal. In some ways, a dark, haunted story in other ways, it's sweet mercy. The story is definitely worth multiple readings. Much like Deasy's songs, it is multi- layered and far more complex than it first seems. I highly recommend this book, paired with the cds Spring Lies Waiting, or Reliance.
