Unlikely Hero Of A Read
If your boyfriend/father/husband/brother is an intelligent tough guy, buy him this book. I came across a copy accidentally, started reading it and couldn't stop. It gives soldiers' first hand accounts of what it was like to be not only in the thick of battle, but on the march, and back at home. Holmes has an uncanny gift for making it all interesting -- you'll find yourself fascinated by trivia like the percentage of men who died from leg vs arm amputations, the accuracy of muskets vs rifles and inundated with surprisingly fascinating explanations as to how soldiers decided whose wives could come along and who couldn't. And you get a look at the first special forces, and basically see why the American army (which is obviously rooted in the British army) is organized the way it is. If you know a guy who watches the history channel a lot, or likes war movies and want to get him something he'll love but didn't even know about it, this is it. He'll thank you, and you can read it when he's done.
