A Terrifying Future That Might Have Been
Imagine a world where the Axis powers won World War II. That is the setting for this great role-playing game by Creative Encounters. Sure, there have been other 'alternate reality' books that have dealt with this subject in the past, but what makes this one unique is that the background is set in the year 2134, almost 200 years AFTER the Third Reich and Japanese Empire conquered the world. Also, no other author before has put so much detail into developing the subject. History took a very different course during WWII, and the two empires have gone on to colonize other worlds and even enslaved alien species. Meanwhile, there are the stirrings of revolution as undergound freedom fighters strive to overthrow the Third Reich, and establish a democratic government. To add to the complex situation, there is an ongoing Cold War between the two empires, as well as Machiavellian intrigues between the various powers that be. It should also be noted that this game in no way promotes anti-semitism or racial hatred. The player characters are meant to be revolutionaries who are trying to destroy the evil around them and restore freedom and hope. As the author states, 'if anything, this book is ANTI-nazi.' I really don't feel that anyone would be offended by the material, and the author handled it very well. I thought this was an excellent game, and it certainly carves out its own unique place among the other RPGs out there. The only thing that keeps me from giving it an outstanding rating is that a few of the art pieces are very weak, and the space combat system and ship construction sections could have been better. However, the overall game mechanics and character creation are easy to grasp, and the individual combat system is among the best I've ever seen. I only wish these guys had more support material out. I would love to see them print a few sourcebooks and modules, and I can't wait to see a rumored second edition.
