    A typical "thriller".

Decent character development, but they still appear like cardboard cutouts at times. The plot is good, but tried and true. Not much new territory covered.

    Don't Quit, John!

Fans of John Rain (and Barry Eisler) all no doubt hope that retirement is only a remote hope for our favorite killer. In Requiem For An Assassin, John Rain once more returns to do good and save the day, but his heart doesn't seem in it so much anymore. He's been to too many good hotels and fine cafes to see the down and dirty jungles and cesspools of crime anymore. Yet for all my love of his work, this time I think John could have tried just a little bit harder. Sure, killing can get old after a while. But for us readers, John, you can't go soft. In this book you start to slide a little. If you really want to retire, hurry up and train that Japanese guy to take your place so Eisler can keep writing the true grit and skip the Parisian fineries. Or is it Eisler who is going soft?
